The Tulsa women's basketball team dropped a 74-47 decision to Cincinnati on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. TU fell to 11-14 on the season and 5-7 in American Athletic Conference play, while UC moved to 17-9 overall and 9-4 in the league.
"We just struggle to score," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "At the first media timeout we were right there in the game, just down 1, but then we didn't score the rest of the quarter. Players can't be a distraction on the floor and can't be a distraction on the bench. If someone is having troubles scoring they can't get down, the team has to lift each other up. We came out in the second half and played great, but there was a timeout and we went flat again and just never got back in it."
Crystal Polk had a team-leading 16 points, while Desiree Lewis added nine, and Addison Richards totaled six. Alexis Gaulden had a team-high five assists and Kendrian Elliott had five rebounds.
Cincinnati had a 39-31 advantage in rebounds, a 10-4 lead in steals and a 4-2 edge in blocks, while both teams had 16 assists.
The Bearcats had 36 points in the paint, 22 points off turnovers and 18 fast-break points, compared to the Hurricane's 34 points in the paint, 10 points off turnovers and 0 fast-break points.
After getting down, 8-2, to start the game, TU battled back to pull within one, 8-7, at the 5:37 mark of the first quarter. The Bearcats, however, outscored the Hurricane, 6-0, to close out the frame with a 14-7 advantage.
Cincinnati had a 22-8 scoring advantage in the second quarter to take a 36-15 lead into halftime. TU shot just 20-percent in the first 20 minutes, including 10-percent from three-point range, while UC was 50-percent from the field and 42-percent from behind the arc.
Tulsa came out fired up in the third quarter, outscoring Cincinnati, 14-4, in the first 4:16 off the clock in the frame to pull to within 11, 40-29, at the 5:44 mark. TU was 7-of-7 to start the period, while UC was 2-of-5.
Cincinnati was forced to call a timeout, but then went on a 12-0 run for a 52-29 advantage at the 2:40 mark, and had a 20-point lead, 53-33, with one quarter to play. Tulsa, however, outscored the Bearcats, 18-17, in the frame.
UC continued to dominate in the fourth quarter, with a 21-14 scoring edge, for the final 27-point win.
Cincinnati was led by Antoinette Miller with 17 points, and Florence Sifa added 14 points and a team-best six steals, while Sifa and Angel Rizor both had seven rebounds.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, February 24 against #2/3 UConn. Game time is set for 2:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
