TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa volleyball team and head coach Ryan Wills have announced the addition of setter Roosa Rautio, a sophomore transfer from the University of North Dakota, to the upcoming team of 2019.
"We are excited to have Roosa join our team," Wills said. "She is a talented and competitive setter, which is always great to have on a team."
Rautio, a 5-foot-9 standout setter from Rovaniemi, Finland, is an experienced player who has had success both at North Dakota and internationally. While in Finland, she played on the U20 Finnish Championship tournament club with numerous former All-Americans, winning the title and being named the tournament's best setter in the process.
As a member of the Fighting Hawks, she played in all of the team's 32 matches in 2018, racking up 1,238 assists as the team's primary setter. Rautio had a breakout freshman season under UND head coach Mark Pryor, tallying a 10.32 assists per set mark to pace the Fighting Hawks.
Rautio comes from a rich familial background of volleyball success, as her sister and father played professional volleyball in her home country. Her father has also coached professional volleyball in Finland and Estonia for more than 30 years.
"Our team is glad to add an athlete from overseas to our roster," Wills added. "Roosa will bring a different culture and different perspective that will benefit our team's environment."
As a whole, the 2018 Tulsa volleyball squad saw another successful season under Wills, picking up the team's first postseason bid since 2013. The squad finished the year with a 19-12 overall record, marking the third time in Wills' five-year tenure the team has reached 19 victories in a season.
