Alexis Gaulden had a stat-line of 16 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds to lead Tulsa to a 49-35 victory over the SMU Mustangs on Wednesday night in front of 849 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
The Tulsa junior guard scored 10 second-half points as the Golden Hurricane increased a 5-point halftime lead to the final 14-point margin. Rebecca Lescay added 12 points for the Hurricane.
Tulsa snapped a 5-game losing streak en route to equaling its win total from each of the past two seasons by improving to 10-12 overall and 4-5 in American Athletic Conference action. The Mustangs fell to 8-14 on the year and 2-7 in league play.
"We had a 40-minute effort, and that was the key, to be tougher than they were," Tulsa head coach Matilda Mossman said. "Neither team scores a lot of points, but the longer we played the more efficient we got as evidenced by our 4th quarter 20 points."
"I like how Alexis led our team," Mossman said. "She kept the team calm and focused, and did her part with 16 points and eight of our 12 assists."
It was a poor shooting night for both teams as Tulsa shot 33-percent from the field and SMU just 29-percent. The taller Mustangs held a 40-31 advantage on the boards, but had 10 more turnovers than Tulsa, 22 to 12.
A low-scoring first-half carried over to the third period as each team scored just 10 points, but the Hurricane exploded for 20 points in the final quarter. The Mustangs had its best quarter of the night with 11 points.
With Tulsa holding a two-point lead at 24-22 at the 3:43 mark of the third period the Hurricane scored the next five points on a Maddie Bittle 3-pointer and two Gaulden free throws to take a 29-22 lead. The Mustangs closed the third period with two free throws, but still trailed at the end of three quarters 29-24.
In the final stanza, Tulsa scored the first 7 points to make the score 36-24, while holding the Mustangs scoreless in the first 4:22. SMU finally got on the scoreboard with 5:38 remaining in the contest to make the score 36-26 before Tulsa again went on a 7-0 run for a 43-26 lead at the 3:47 mark.
Tulsa took its biggest lead of 19 points on a Gaulden 3-pointer with 3:03 on the clock.
It was a low scoring first 10 minutes of the game as the Hurricane came out of the quarter leading the Mustangs by a 10-7 score. The first basket didn't come until two minutes had already run off the clock when SMU's Marie Olsen scored on a layup.
Tulsa closed out the first period on a 5-0 run, while holding the Mustangs scoreless in the final 5:30 of the quarter.
There was not much scoring in the second quarter as the Hurricane outscored the Mustangs 9-to-7 in the period and went into halftime with a 19-14 lead.
Tulsa scored the first basket of the period on a Kendrian Elliott layup at the 9:14 mark, but wouldn't score again until over 5 minutes passed on the game clock. SMU couldn't manage much offense either as the Mustangs were stuck on 12 points for nearly 6 minutes.
The first half ended with both teams shooting under 30-percent from the field and neither team with a player scoring more than 6 points. The Mustangs did have 11 turnovers to Tulsa's 4, but the Hurricane scored just 5 points off of those Mustang miscues.
Tulsa returns to the Reynolds Center this Sunday to face the Tulane Green Wave in a 2:00 p.m. game.
