TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa women's tennis squad (7-4) handled the Arkansas Razorbacks (7-2), 4-1, in its Saturday afternoon match on the indoor courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Tulsa used the doubles point as a launching point, as the Golden Hurricane struck first in the match. TU's No. 10-ranked tandem of Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner first defeated Arkansas' Tatum Rice and Martina Zerulo, 6-2.
To give the Golden Hurricane the 1-0 match lead, senior Martha Matoula and freshman Manon Meulenberg followed suit, topping the Razorbacks, 6-2, in the tandem's season debut.
Freshman Marina Davtyan struck first in singles for Tulsa in the sixth spot, picking up a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory to push TU ahead two. Shortly after, Ploner followed suit, nabbing a 6-1, 6-3 win over the Razorbacks' Alter.
Arkansas managed to get on the board with a three-set victory at the second singles spot, as No. 78 Rice edged out Matoula, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. Despite the loss, Matoula still paces TU in singles with a 6-2 record in the dual season.
To clinch the match for the Golden Hurricane, freshman Megan Hopton added a straight-set victory of her own, winning 7-5, 6-3 to improve to 6-3 in singles on the season. With the win, the Golden Hurricane is now 7-2 on the courts of the Case Tennis Center in the dual season.
Head coach Dean Orford's bunch hits the road for a three-week road stretch, kicking off with the team's first true away match on Saturday, Feb. 16, match against Kansas in Lawrence at 12 p.m. CT.
