Tulsa Drops 71-49 Decision at Wichita State in Final Regular Season Contest

Crystal Polk had a team-best 20 points, but it wasn't enough as Tulsa dropped a 71-49 decision at Wichita State on Monday night at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan. TU fell to 12-17 on the season and finished with a 6-10 mark in American Athletic Conference play, while WSU moved to 12-17 overall and 5-11 in the league.
Alexis Gaulden added eight points and three steals, while Rebecca Lescay tallied seven points and a team-leading five assists. Polk also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
Tulsa shot 35-percent from the field, but just 15-percent (3-of-20) from behind the arc and 37-percent (6-of-16) from the free throw line, while Wichita State shot 46-percent from the field, 38-percent from three-point range and 50-percent (11-of-22) from the line.
TU had a 13-8 lead in assists, a 6-1 advantage in blocks and an 8-6 edge in steals, while WSU had a 35-29 lead in rebounds.
Tulsa jumped out to a six-point lead (12-6) with 5:43 to play in the first quarter, but Wichita State battled back to take a 13-12 advantage with 3:29 remaining in the frame. The two teams ended the period tied, 15-all.
Wichita State came back out on the floor fired up in the second quarter, outscoring Tulsa, 13-2, to take an 11-point lead, 28-17, at the 4:54 mark. TU battled back and closed the gap to just three points on a 10-2 run for a 30-27 score with 1:11 left in the frame, but WSU took a six-point advantage into the break, 33-27.
Both teams shot above 40-percent from the field in the first half, as the Hurricane was 13-of-32 for 40-percent, and the Shockers were 14-of-33 for 42-percent. TU, however, was 0-of-8 from behind the arc, while WSU shot 27-percent from the three-point line, and both teams were 50-percent from the free throw line.
Wichita State had a 20-9 scoring advantage in the third quarter, while shooting 20-percent better from the field than the Hurricane with 53-percent by WSU and just 33-percent by TU.
WSU outscored TU, 18-13, in the final frame, for the final 22-point win.
The Shockers were led by Seraphine Bastin with 19 points, Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage with 13 and Carla Bremaud with 11.
Tulsa will play in the American Athletic Conference Championship on Friday, March 8. The bracket for the tournament will be announced late tonight on TheAmerican.org.
