ORLANDO,
Fla. – The Tulsa women's tennis squad (15-9) advanced to its fifth-straight American semifinals on Friday with a 4-0 win over Wichita State (14-10) in the quarterfinal round at the USTA National Campus.

To kick off the day, Tulsa's No. 17 doubles tandem of Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner picked up its 14th victory of the dual season with a ranked win over WSU's Marta Bellucco and Fatima Bizhukova, 6-0.

With the win, the TU tandem has now racked up three victories over ranked opponents in 2019, along with a team-leading 14-4 mark at the No. 1 flight for the Golden Hurricane.

Wichita State responded with a 6-2 win of its own at the No. 3 spot to even up the doubles point. In what came down to Martha Matoula and Shura Poppe in the second position, the Tulsa duo topped Wichita State, 6-3, to give TU the 1-0 advantage.

The Golden Hurricane continued its strong start into singles, nabbing five of the six first sets from the Shockers. Okalova led from the top, earning her third ranked win of 2019 over No. 125 Bizhukova, 6-2, 6-2 to extend the TU lead to two.

Matoula followed suit with a straight-set victory of her own over the Shockers' Sandra Honigova, 6-4, 6-3. The victory marks the team-leading 18th of the season for the senior, as she owns a 18-2 mark in solo play in the dual season, winning her past 12 singles matches.

The match was clinched at the No. 3 position, as Ploner secured her third-straight solo match victory over Wichita State's Esther Thebault, 6-3, 6-4. The junior has thrived from the third spot this season, owning a 10-3 mark when playing at No. 3.

Poppe, Megan Hopton and Marina Davtyan were all tied in the second sets of their respective matches when the decisive point was clinched.

The Golden Hurricane will face off with tournament No. 1 seed and No. 25-ranked UCF (20-3) in the conference semifinals tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT. Tulsa and the Knights have squared off twice this season, with UCF taking both matches over TU.
