ORLANDO, Fla. – The Tulsa men's tennis squad (14-12) dropped its American Athletic Conference quarterfinals matchup to Wichita State (16-9), 4-2, on Friday at the USTA National Campus.
The Shockers took the early advantage after a back-and-forth doubles point. Wichita State's No. 25-ranked duo of Murkel Dellien and Marius Frosa took down TU's No. 78 Jarod Hing and Boriss Kamdem, 6-3.
Tulsa responded with a 7-5 victory at the No. 2 spot, as senior Majed Kilani and freshman Kody Pearson combined for the duo's fourth win this season to even up doubles. Wichita State managed to edge out Tulsa in the final doubles match, taking a narrow 7-5 win at the No. 3 position for the match lead.
The Golden Hurricane responded in singles, securing four of six first frames over the Shockers. Redshirt-freshman Stefan Hampe evened the match at 1-all with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 performance at the No. 4 spot.
Hing followed suit shortly after with a straight-set victory at the third flight over WSU's Marius Frosa to push TU ahead 2-1. The Shockers responded at the sixth spot, as Stefan Latinovic defeated TU's Tom Thelwall-Jones, 6-4, 6-1.
Wichita State managed to secure the match with consecutive wins at the No. 1 and 5 positions, as Kilani and Daniel Siddall fell to Haru Inoue and Orel Ovil, respectively.
The team will await to see if it qualified for the team, singles or doubles rendition of the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships, set to take place at the familiar USTA National Campus from May 16-25.
