ORLANDO, Fla. – Tulsa men's tennis senior Majed Kilani will represent TU at the NCAA Men's Singles Championships on Monday, set to face off with UCLA's Keegan Smith in the opening round at the USTA National Campus on Monday.
Smith, ranked No. 36 in the latest Oracle ITA singles rankings, is 15-2 for the Bruins in the dual season. The sophomore California native played each of his matches at the No. 2 position for UCLA, while advancing to the semifinal round of the NCAA Doubles Championships a season ago.
The event, scheduled to run from Monday-Saturday at the USTA National Campus, will feature one round of the prestigious tournament each day. The singles and doubles finals will conclude the NCAA Championships on Saturday, May 25.
The appearance will mark Kilani's second-consecutive year at the solo tournament, earning another alternate bid in 2018. The Tunisia native fell in a three-set battle to Virginia's No. 29-ranked Mitch Harper in the opening round a season ago.
Kilani qualified for the event after yet another stellar performance under head coach Vince Westbrook. The senior boasted a 12-10 record atop the singles lineup for the Golden Hurricane in the dual season. Including the fall, the Tunisia native nabbed seven victories over ranked opponents, earning two ranked wins over top-35 players at the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa.
For his performance, he was named to the American Athletic Conference Singles All-Conference team for the second time in his career, marking his third overall all-conference nod.
During his historic career at Tulsa, Kilani is ranked just outside the program's all-time top-10 with 70 singles wins, needing three to tie No. 10.
The 2019 NCAA Men's and Women's Singles/Doubles Championships will air live on the Tennis Channel throughout each day of competition, as the men's and women's individual singles tournaments in Orlando will each feature 64 players, with 32 doubles pairs comprising both the men's and women's doubles tournaments.
