Tulsa Heads West for NCAA Preliminary Rounds on Thursday

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Tulsa track and field squad will send nine athletes to the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Sacramento, California, beginning Thursday and running through Saturday at Hornet Stadium.
Competing on the campus of Sacramento State University, Bailey Stewart (400m), Grey Howard (800m), Robert Tully (800m), Ben Preisner (10,000m), Aleks Rapp (HT), Caitlin Klopfer (10,000m), Katharina Pesendorfer (3,000m SC), Alyssa Bolliger (3,000m SC) and Carsyn Spurgeon (LJ) will represent TU in the Golden State.
Preisner enters as the most-frequent visitor, having competed at the NCAA West Prelims in all four years in Tulsa. He will compete in the final event of day one, the men's 10,000 meters, at 11:40 p.m. CT on Thursday, May 23.
Rapp kicks off the events for the Golden Hurricane in Sacramento, beginning with the men's hammer throw at 2 p.m. CT on the first day. Stewart will be the first TU athlete on the track, beginning at 9:45 p.m. CT on Thursday in the men's 400 meters. Tully and Howard will follow shortly after with the men's 800 meters at 10:35 p.m.
Klopfer will run the 10,000 meters directly before Preisner's appearance, qualifying with a time of 33:51.85 at the Stanford Invitational. She will run against 48 of the nation's best at 11 p.m. CT.
Spurgeon is making her first appearance in Sacramento in the women's long jump, entering with the seventh-best mark in the region with her PR leap of 6.43m/21-1.25 feet at the Drake Relays. The Oklahoma native will participate at 8:45 p.m. CT on Thursday.
If advanced, Stewart will be the first to run on Friday, May 24, competing in the 400-meter quarterfinals at 7:45 p.m. CT. Tully and Howard will have the same opportunity if qualified, running in the 800-meter quarters at 8:45 p.m. CT.
The 3,000-meter steeplechase will close TU's appearance at the NCAA West Prelims, as Bolliger and Pesendorfer will run at 10:20 p.m. CT on Friday. Both athletes made their qualifying marks at the American Outdoor Championships two weeks ago.

Athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective event earn berths into the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. The best 24 relay times also advance to NCAA prelims. Athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West Preliminary Rounds sites will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, June 5-8.
At the 2019 American Outdoor Championships, the Golden Hurricane added another two titles in the form of Carsyn Spurgeon (long jump) and Grey Howard (800 meters), along with two school records. The men's team finished fifth overall, while the women left Wichita with a seventh-place finish.
