2019 Tulsa Rowing Foreign Tour – Blog Entry #2

The Tulsa rowing team is on an 18-day foreign tour to Venice, Italy, Bled, Slovenia, and Henley on Thames, England. The team will have some fun, as well as practice and compete in the Bled International Regatta (June 14-16) and Henley Women's Regatta (June 21-23). To document their adventure, six different rowers will blog about a three-day time period.
Today's entry is from Becky Coleman, a freshman from Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
Today we set off for Bled, Slovenia. We took a bus out of Venice and towards the mountains of Slovenia. Then we arrived at Lake Bled and had to pick ours jaws up off the ground due to the stunning venue! We will spend the next week here training and racing at the beautiful lake.
After check in we found ourselves at the local grocery store getting lunch and before we knew it we were in the water. It didn't take long for most of the team to test out the lake, probably within the first hour of getting here. The weather was beautiful and warm right up until we started to rig the boats. The picturesque view stared to turn a little dark under the thunderstorm that was on its way. Nevertheless, this didn't dampen team spirits and we managed to get in another swim between the hail and rain.
Our second day in Bled we managed to get on the water in near perfect conditions. Rowing on Lake Bled was an amazing experience that we could never forget. We are so thankful for the donors that made it possible for this trip to be a reality. After a great morning session, we were straight back in the water swimming. Some of us decided to swim to the island in the middle of the lake, which in hindsight was a very long way but we managed it. It proved to be a good recovery method! We had another rowing session, dinner and then went to explore the town.
Our third day in Bled we had another morning session, but then had the afternoon off. A few members of the team met Jose Berc, who rowed for the former Yugoslavia at the 1964 and 1972 Olympic Games in Tokyo and Munich. We spent the day exploring the trails and sunbathing by the water. Now we are getting ready to race tomorrow!
