2019 Tulsa Rowing Foreign Tour – Blog Entry #3
6/17/2019 1:52:00 PM | Rowing
The Tulsa rowing team is on an 18-day foreign tour to Venice, Italy, Bled, Slovenia, and Henley on Thames, England. The team will have some fun, as well as practice and compete in the Bled International Regatta (June 14-16) and Henley Women's Regatta (June 21-23). To document their adventure, six different rowers will blog about a three-day time period.
Today's entry is from Cloee Graham, a freshman from Sulphur, Okla.
Friday was the start of three days where we finally got to do what we do best . . .RACE!!! We woke up to the sound of chirping birds and gusts of wind whistling through the trees. Lake Bled is a majestic place that highlights the beauty of nature. We truly are grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity. As a weekend full of racing rolled in, we started to rest our bodies and lay off the gelato a bit (well maybe some of us did). Friday morning, a few of us took a hike up a mountain that led to a beautiful view. That afternoon, the racing picked up. Everyone pulled hard and did it the Tulsa way. Directly after every race, everyone jumped in the water for a cool down. The water is crystal clear and it is impossible to hold anyone back from it.
The racing on Saturday started at 8 am and went through the afternoon. It was a long successful day of racing. Veronique Ulrich and Helen Leigh had a standout performance taking gold in the Senior Women's Pair. The Varsity 8+ race was held in the mid-day. As they were pulling hard with only six people rowing down the course, many spectators and coaches were a bit confused and concerned; only to find out that the stroke seat was pulling too hard and broke an oar approximately 250 meters into the race (maybe the oar was slightly "antique"). Not letting that hold them back, coxswain Chloe Henderson held all rowers intact as they came storming across the finish line. As Saturday came to an end, we cooled down with a dip in the water and got in bed early to get ready for our last day of racing here in beautiful Bled, Slovenia.
On Sunday we wrapped up the racing here in Slovenia. Every single rower represented The University of Tulsa well, to say the least. Though receiving medals and winning is something we love to do, it is the experience of being surrounded by many rowers and competitors from various countries that we will remember forever. Sunday evening we spent our time enjoying every last minute here. Some went on bike rides around the town, and others enjoyed the sun while soaking it up in the water. Though the end of our time at Lake Bled has come, the glistening water and enchanting mountains will always be engraved with detail in the back of our minds. We will now pack our bags as we will be traveling to London, UK early in the morning to prepare for racing at Women's Henley.
Adijo Slovenia!!
