PRACTICE #9 RECAP: Tulsa Defense Controls Scrimmage Saturday Morning

TULSA, Okla. –– "I thought our defense did a great job of coming out and establishing the momentum and then just held on to it," is how Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery described Tulsa's first of two scrimmages during preseason camp.

"Defense did a great job establishing and holding onto the momentum," said Montgomery. "We have to do a better job offensively of coming out and executing. We had things there. We just didn't execute –– didn't put it in the right spot, didn't take advantage of some of the things we needed to. It's a learning process. Usually defenses are always ahead this time of year and offenses are going to keep growing and getting better and that's where we're at right now."

Montgomery credited the defense for its down and distance play and forcing long yardage situations and turnovers.

"The defense played down and distances extremely well. They did a great job on early downs of keeping the offense in long yardage situations then when you get guys in those situations you have to keep your foot on the gas, and they did that," said Montgomery. "Our defense is growing in confidence and our guys really understand what we're doing schematically."

"The defense forced turnovers today, got takeaways and forced a lot of three-and- outs and that's what you want in your defense. If you can get on and off the field like that, continue to apply pressure and keep momentum good things are going to happen," Montgomery added.

Montgomery cited a good give-and-take between the two units throughout camp.

"It's been good give-and-take between the offense and defense throughout camp, but today the defense took it to another level. Offensively, we have to match that intensity and continue to keep getting better," said Montgomery.

"Today's not going to be who we are on offense. We'll study this tape and continue to learn and get better from it. More than anything, I think our mindset wasn't right today. We came out with the idea we'll just keep doing what we're doing in practice, but the defense stepped it up a level and we didn't match it. We have to come out and match that intensity."

Tulsa will be off on Sunday before returning to the practice field Monday morning.

Next Saturday, Aug. 17, Tulsa football fans will have an opportunity to see the Golden Hurricane in action, get autographs and enjoy a morning of football at the annual Tulsa Football Fan Fest, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
