The 2019 Tulsa women's soccer season kicks off this weekend at the Cowgirl Classic on Friday, August 23 and Sunday, August 25, as the Golden Hurricane takes on Texas Southern and host McNeese State, respectively. Both games will be played at Cowgirl Field in Lake Charles, La.
TU has 18 returners from last year, including eight starters, and welcomes eight newcomers to the roster. Head Coach Kyle Cussen, who is in his 12th season at the helm, is the programs' winningest coach with 98 wins in 11 seasons. He also has a career 208-168-42 mark in 21 years as a head coach.
Golden Hurricane senior forward Anna Williams was tabbed to the American Athletic Conference Preseason All-Conference Team last week, as she ranked fifth in points (22), sixth in goals (9), 11th in game-winning goals (2), 13th in assists (4) and 16th in shots (38) among the league's best a year ago.
This will be Tulsa's first meeting with Texas Southern on the women's soccer pitch. The Lady Tigers tallied seven victories last year. Senior midfielder Begona Rodriguez-Bravo was named the SWAC's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while teammates Brooke Ianiero and Mia Marshall were selected to the All-SWAC Second Team.
The McNeese State Cowgirls registered 13 wins last season, but Tulsa has won both previous meetings with MSU, including a 3-0 win in 2008 and a 3-0 win in 2015. The McNeese soccer team placed six Cowgirls on the 2019 Preseason All-Southland Conference team, including Rachel Palet and Havana Johnson as first team selections, while Keely Morrow, Rebecca Adcock, Anna Watson and Emma Roccaforte were named to the second team.
