TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team had a memorable 2019 season. In his sixth season atop the helm, head coach Ryan Wills led the Golden Hurricane to an 18-16 overall record and an 8-8 mark for sixth-place in the American Athletic Conference.
Tulsa clinched the final spot in The American Women's Volleyball Tournament and earned a bid to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) for the second consecutive season. The 2019 Hurricane squad became the first team in program history to win multiple postseason matches in a single campaign. TU ended up going 3-1 in postseason play, advancing to the NIVC semifinals. The season would come to an end following a four-set loss at South Dakota in the second matchup of the season between the two teams.
Wills, who has led Tulsa to 18-or-more victories in four seasons overall, became the fourth head coach in program history to reach 100 career wins at TU.
Senior libero Taylor Horsfall broke the program records for digs in a career with 2,489, and in a single season with 805. Both figures also stand atop The American record books. Horsfall, who led Division I in total digs, became the third D-I player since 2011 to eclipse 800+ digs in a season.
Horsfall was recognized as the Libero of the Year in the American Athletic Conference for the second time in three years, while Dilara Gedikoglu was awarded Freshman of the Year. The two also earned First Team All-American Athletic honors.
Additional program records were topped throughout the year. Junior Callie Cook's 127 block assists is a new single-season record. She was one of three Hurricane to record 100+ assisted blocks. Senior Maddie Rhoder finished with 109 for fifth in a single campaign, while junior Maggie Hembree added 104 block assists, tying Cook's record in 2018 for seventh.
As a team, Tulsa finished with 470 block assists, which is the second-most in a season in program history.
Senior Mariah Pardo concluded her career with 2,795 assists for fifth all-time at TU.
