After shooting a solid 42.9-percent in the first quarter, Tulsa was just 10-of-42 for 23.8-percent in the remaining three quarters, while the Shockers started the game at just 14-percent and was 44-percent in the final three frames for a 57-46 win on Wednesday night at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan. The Golden Hurricane fell to 5-12 on the season and 0-4 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Shockers moved to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in the league.
"We got off to a good start shooting wise, but then we got away from what was working and that results in us shooting 23-percent, 26-percent and 21-percent in the other quarters," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "The way Wichita State shot the ball and the way they got the shots they wanted in the third quarter was the change in the game. We still fought, we still competed, we still defended, but we are only scoring 46 points and that isn't enough to win."
Kendrian Elliott had her eighth double-double of the season and 14th of her career as she finished with team-bests of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Alexis Gaulden added eight points and five assists, while Maddie Bittle had seven points and Rebecca Lescay earned three steals.
Tulsa jumped out to a 7-2 lead over Wichita State with 5:10 on the clock in the first quarter, and climbed to a 16-4 advantage at the end of the first frame. Elliott and Bittle both had a team-best seven points in the first 10 minutes, while the Golden Hurricane shot a solid 42.9-percent from the field and 75-percent from three-point range. TU forced five Shocker turnovers and held them to just 14-percent from the field.
A free throw made and a three-pointer both by Elliott put Tulsa up 20-4, a game-high 16-point advantage, at the 9:38 mark of the second quarter, but WSU battled back with a 7-0 run to trail 20-11 with 5:52 on the clock. The Hurricane outscored the Shockers, 8-4, to close out the half with a 28-15 lead.
WSU battled back to pull to within five, 30-25, with 7:17 on the clock in the third quarter, and then outscored TU, 9-3, to take their first lead of the contest, 34-33, at the 2:45 mark of the frame. Wichita State owned a 41-38 advantage at the end of the period as they outscored Tulsa, 26-10, in the third quarter and shot an outstanding 71-percent in the frame compared to TU's 26-percent.
In the final quarter, the Shockers outscored the Hurricane, 16-8, for the 11-point win.
WSU was led by Carla Bremaud and Seraphine Bastin with 13 points apiece, while Mariah McCully added 11. Asia Henderson pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds, and McCully had three steals.
Tulsa had a 12-6 advantage in assists and a 10-7 edge in steals, Wichita State had a 49-32 lead in rebounds and a 5-3 edge in blocks. TU forced 21 WSU turnovers, but the Hurricane had 18 of their own in the contest.
The Golden Hurricane had a chance to start the game with a 2-0 lead as the Shockers were assessed a technical foul prior to tip off due to the backboard lights not working properly. Addison Richards took the two free throws, but missed them both.
Tulsa will return to action at #1/4 UConn beginning at 11:00 am on Sunday, January 19 in Storrs, Conn.
