Golden Hurricane Combine for All-Conference Honors in Four Events on Day One of American Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Tulsa track and field team finished the first day of the 2020 American Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships combing All-Conference awards in four events on Friday. The two-day invitational is taking place at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
In the team rankings, the Tulsa men sit in second place with 25 points. Houston leads the men's side with 72.5 points, while Cincinnati holds 24 points for third. The Tulsa women hold 28 points and are just 1.5 points behind first place ECU. The Houston women stand at third with 25 points.
Carsyn Spurgeon secured the first All-Conference accolade of the day. She won the long jump and broke her own school record in the event, as she leaped 6.14 meters (20' 1.75").
Three Golden Hurricane earned All-Conference recognition in the 5,000-meter run. On the women's side, Caitlin Klopfer ran to a time of 16:31.00 for third place. The men's squad featured a pair of Hurricane in the top three. Isaac Akers took home silver, finishing at 14:15.40. He edged teammate Patrick Dever, who finished to a time of 14:15.49 for bronze.
Tulsa's final All-Conference nod went to the Women's Distance Medley Relay team. Keely Jones, Jaidah McCallon, Katharina Pesendorfer and Spurgeon finished with a time of 11:34.21 for third. The time ranks second in program history.
All six men in the mile run advanced to Saturday's finals. Scott Beattie finished third overall at 4:12.23, followed by Cameron Field (4:15.55) and Jacob Brown (4:12.51) in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Christian Baker ran to a time of 4:12.70 for seventh. Adam Breaux took ninth at 4:13.69 and Jerik Embleton rounded out the top 10 at 4:14.24.
Henry Visser earned a spot in the 400-meter finals. The junior finished in a tie for fifth and set a new PR in the event to a time of 48.58. He shaved over a second off his preview personal best.
Adrena Mazzei nearly earned a spot in the mile run finals on Saturday, as she finished 13th overall at 5:01.26.
Caroline Miller and Ashley Barnes each tallied new personal-best times in the 5,000-meter run. Miller cut her previous time by nearly 18 seconds for fifth place at 16:55.53. Barnes trimmed over one second of her previous best time, as she finished seventh in 17:08.22.
Jackson Schwartz (14:31.62, 7th) and Alice Newcombe (17:26.81, 10th) also set PR's in the 5,000-meter run, while Kyran Lacy set a new PR time in the 400-meter dash at 49.93.
On Saturday, the women and men's mile run finals are slated to open track events with 11:20 and 11:30 a.m. starts, respectively.
