Tulsa Men's Tennis Splits Competition in Texas on Friday

LUBBOCK, Texas – 
The Tulsa men's tennis team split its competition in Lubbock, Texas on Friday, following a 4-1 loss to No. 18 Texas Tech and a 4-0 sweep of New Mexico State. Both matches were held at the McLeod Tennis Center on the campus of Texas Tech University. The Golden Hurricane stand at 8-5 overall, while the Red Raiders improved to 10-4 on the year and the Aggies dropped to 6-6.

The Hurricane are scheduled to return to Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Sunday, where they are set to play two more matches. The first match is set for 11 a.m. vs. Omaha (3-6), followed by Oral Roberts (4-5) at 6 p.m.

Match 1: No. 18 Texas Tech 4, Tulsa 1
Tulsa trailed at all three doubles matches early in the match, but clawed their way to victory in the top two spots.

Connor Di Marco and Kody Pearson secured their win at No. 1 doubles by way of a 6-4 win against Isaac Arevalo and Jackson Cobb. That tied doubles at 1-1. Jarod Hing and Tom Thelwall-Jones then stormed back and clinched the doubles point over Reed Collier and Parker Wynn, 7-6(4). That gave the Hurricane its only lead of the match at 1-0.

In singles, No. 56-ranked Pearson squared off against No. 53-ranked Wynn at the top spot. The sophomore played a tiebreak in the first set. He pushed the Red Raider to beyond seven points, but suffered the loss in straight sets, 7-6(8), 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Hing fell 6-2, 6-1 to No. 74-ranked Ilgiz Valiev. Di Marco would suffer a straight-sets loss to No. 123-ranked Collier in the No. 4 position, 6-0, 6-2. Boriss Kamdem fell to Bjorn Thomson in the bottom spot, 6-2, 6-4.

The Hurricane held the advantage at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively, but each match would go unfinished.

Match 2: Tulsa 4, New Mexico State 0
Tulsa clinched its match against New Mexico State, 4-0, in what marked the first meeting between the two programs since 2005.

Connor Di Marco and Kody Pearson improved to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the top doubles spot with a dominating 6-1 win over Nicolas Buitrago and Jordy Visser. Jarod Hing and Tom Thelwall-Jones clinched their second straight doubles match of the day in the No. 2 position, 6-4, against Martin Simecek and Luis Flores.

In singles, Ezequiel Santalla earned his first win of the year in the No. 3 slot in a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Timothee Curnier. Pearson put the Golden Hurricane up 3-0, as he defeated Nicolas Buitrago in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Stefan Hampe improved to 4-0 on the year at No. 2 singles, as he sealed the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Martin Simecek.
