Tulsa Uses Hot Start to Take Down Maryland 4-0

MIAMI, Fla. – The Golden Hurricane scored 4 runs in the first inning on 4 hits to win the second game of the FIU Classic, 4-0 against the Maryland Terrapins.
Mikayla Whitten sparked the hot start for the Hurricane with a single to third base. Kari Briggs recorded her second extra-base hit of the weekend with a triple down the right field line. Briggs' triple scored Whitten from first giving the Hurricane a 1-0 lead.
Senior Alexis Perry singled to left scoring Briggs and giving Tulsa its third straight hit to start the contest. Two batters later, Sarah Briers hit a ball through the right side legging out the second Hurricane triple of the inning, scoring Perry in the process. An Aubree Seaney groundout capped off the Hurricane 4-run outburst by scoring Briers from third.
Tulsa improves to 12-9 on the season and 1-1 in the FIU Classic, while Maryland falls to a record of 9-11.
Samantha Pochop started for the Hurricane in the circle for the 6th time this season. The junior threw 7.0 innings, giving up 7 hits while not allowing a run. The shutout was her team-leading third of the season.
She moves to 4-2 on the season while increasing her strikeout total to 56 in 44.2 innings pitched.
Maryland put runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, but Pochop kept the Terrapins from scoring in each inning. The Henderson, Nev. native struck out 6 batters in the game only allowing one walk.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, Aubree Seaney drew a 1-out walk to give Tulsa a runner on base. Two batters later, the Hurricane placed a runner in scoring position on a 2-out walk by Tajiah Ellison. However, Tulsa ended the inning on a fielder's choice at third base, stranding two runners.
Tulsa is back in action tonight for game three of the FIU Classic, facing off against the Samford Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. (CT).
