Tulsa's fifth-ranked men's soccer team claimed their first American Athletic Conference Regular Season title with a 3-2 win over Temple on Sunday night at the Temple Sports Complex in Philadelphia, Pa. The Golden Hurricane moved to 12-1-1 on the season and 7-1-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Owls fell to 2-11-2 overall and 0-9 in the league.
"I thought we were really good in the first half in terms of our possession," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "I thought we created good chances, we took control of the game early and defensively we were very good in the first half. We obviously didn't want to concede the first goal and it gave them a lot of momentum which led to them tying it up. It wasn't an easy scenario for us, but the fact that we came back and got the third goal is a testament to the teams' mentality. It isn't easy winning the regular season title and it is a great accomplishment and a special moment for the players and the program."
With the regular season title, Tulsa earned the right to host The American Championship with semifinals on Wednesday, November 10 and the Championship match on Saturday, November 13 at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU will play their final regular season contest on Friday, November 5 against UCF beginning at 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
Austen Schweinert punched in a cross from Chase Bromstedt from five yards out to put Tulsa on the board at the 16:50 mark. Ben Barkley made it a two-goal cushion in the 43rd minute as he drilled in a pass from Trace Ibrahim and Tulsa took that lead into the break.
Andrew Burkhart got one back for the Owls in the 63rd minute, and then Nigel Griffith made it a 2-2 game in the 66th minute, but Takayoshi Wyatt put the Golden Hurricane up 3-2 off an assist from Schweinert at the 67:53 mark for the game winner.
Tulsa had a 16-9 lead in shots, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal, and a 6-1 lead in corner kick.
Barkley had a team-best four shots, while Schweinert added three attempts, and Til Zinnhardt, Henry Sach and Ibrahim all added two attempts. Alex Lopez logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up two saves.
