TULSA, Okla. –– In his first game back in a Tulsa uniform, Jeriah Horne's career high-tying 28 points lifted the Golden Hurricane to an 82-75 win against the Northwestern State Demons on Wednesday evening at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Tulsa moved to 1-0 on the season, while the Demons fell to 0-2 at the end of their two-game road trip through Oklahoma.
"Winning is hard," Tulsa head coach Frank Haith said. "You guys have heard me say that before. Mike (McConathy) has one almost 700 games, and he's got a guy like Coleman (Kendal), who's fantastic. It's hard to win. I'm proud of our guys. We have a lot of new guys, and we made some big plays. We did winning things that help you win tight games. Already, with a new squad, which is really encouraging."
Horne was 8-12 from the field and 4-6 from beyond the arc to lead all scorers. Sam Griffin, with 17 on 5-14 shooting and Darien Jackson, 13 points, were the only other Hurricane to reach double figures. Freshman Anthony Pritchard dished out six assists and had a plus-minus of 17. Northwestern State was paced by returning freshman Kendal Coleman, who had 22 on 10-15 shooting. Cedric Garrett had 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds as well.
The first half was tightly contested with neither team able to gain much of an advantage. Northwestern State built an early 21-14 lead with 11:10 to play, but Horne responded with his second three-pointer of the evening, a fastbreak dunk and a second-chance layup to tie the game less than a minute later. Tulsa's largest lead of the half was nine, but the Hurricane lead was only 45-39 at the break.
Both teams shot the ball well in the first half. The Demons shot 43.8 percent at a 14-32 clip, while the Hurricane knocked down 47.1 percent of their attempts (16-34). Northwestern State held the advantage on three-pointers 8-6. Horne and Griffin combined to score 29 points, more than half the team's total.
Tulsa threatened to pull away multiple times in the second half, leading by as many as 11 three times, but the Demons refused to go away. A scoring drought from 10:46 to 5:08 allowed Northwestern State to go on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 65.
Coleman briefly gave NSU the lead, but Griffin responded with a quick three and then a pair of free throws next trip down the floor to give Tulsa a 71-68 advantage with 2:34 remaining. In the end, Horne put the game to bed at the charity stripe, going 4-4 down the stretch to seal the win.
The shooting trend from the first half continued in the second half as both teams shot above 46.0 percent from the field. Tulsa was 27-58 (46.6 percent) for the game, while Northwestern State 30-64 (46.9 percent), including 50.0 percent shooting in the second half. Both teams knocked down 10 treys. Tulsa's bench made a huge difference, outscoring Norrthwestern State 31-17. Tulsa also held advantages on points in the paint (30-24), second chance points (16-12) and fast break points (12-7).
Tulsa returns to action on Saturday when the Hurricane welcomes Air Force to the Reynolds Center. Tip-off for the second game of the season is at noon and ESPN+ will carry the game.
