Tulsa Dominates the Paint in Season Opening Win Over Oklahoma Christian

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa controlled the paint against Oklahoma Christian in a 100-57 victory at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Monday night, grabbing 61 rebounds and scoring 50 points in the paint. The 61 boards tied for the ninth most in program history and were the most in a game since Dec. 12, 2004 against Prairie View A&M.
Tulsa (1-0, American) opened the game with a commanding start, establishing a 9-0 lead with early contributions from David Green and Tylen Riley. Oklahoma Christian responded with a layup by Carson Jones at 16:57, but Tulsa maintained control, extending their lead to 21-13 by the 11:51 mark with Ade Popoola's layup and free throw. Tulsa's defense was strong, as evidenced by blocks from Popoola and Ian Smikle, who also contributed offensively with a late dunk to help Tulsa close the half with a 52-30 advantage.
Tulsa dominated the second half, securing a decisive 48-27 advantage over Oklahoma Christian. Green contributed significantly with a layup and a dunk, while Popoola added a 3-pointer at the 16:45 mark to extend the lead. Jaylen Lawal was effective from the free-throw line, scoring two consecutive shots to push the lead further. Tyler Behrend's offensive rebounds and subsequent layup at 16:08 played a key role in maintaining momentum. Tulsa's defense was solid, highlighted by blocks from Miles Barnstable and KJ Martin Jr., which limited the Eagles' scoring opportunities.
Riley led the way with 15 points, converting all eight of his free throws and adding three assists. Barnstable contributed 14 points, sinking two three-pointers and grabbing four rebounds. Green matched Riley's scoring with 15 points, going 5-for-10 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 at the line. Smikle was defensively active, blocking two shots while chipping in six points and collecting nine rebounds.
Up next for the Golden Hurricane is the Veterans Classic in Annapolis, Maryland, where they will take on Rhode Island on Friday at 5 p.m. CT. That game will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.
