Tulsa’s Comeback Attempt Falls Just Short at Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. Staring down a 0-2 deficit on the road against Wichita State, the Tulsa volleyball team's comeback attempt came up just short, dropping Wednesday night's match in five sets, 25-14, 25-14, 22-25, 23-25, 16-14. Tulsa drops to 12-12, 7-8 in American Athletic Conference play while Wichita State improves to 16-8, 10-5 in AAC play.
 
Tulsa got off to a rocky start, only scoring 28 points total in the first two sets. But with its back against the wall, the Golden Hurricane jumped out to a 10-5 third set lead and would take the set by three points. After only having five kills in the first two sets, Kayley Cassaday recorded seven kills on .500 hitting percentage in the third set along, while Roosa Rautio's thirteen assists aided Tulsa's third set win.
 
Tulsa jumped out to a 14-9 advantage in the fourth set before a Wichita State 5-0 run tied it up at 14. After back-and-forth action that led to a tie at 17, the Hurricane dashed to a 21-17 lead thanks to a 4-0 run consisting of a Callie Cook solo block and kills from Rachel Brown, Aysu Dalogullari and Maggie Hembree. Tulsa would hold off Wichita State's late comeback attempt with Cassaday's 19th kill to force a winner take all fifth set.
 
After facing a two-point deficit, Tulsa went on a 6-1 run to take a 6-3 lead in the middle of the final set. With the score knotted up at nine, the Shockers would go on a crucial 4-0 run that gave them a 13-9 lead. After a service error, Wichita State was one point away from a match win at 14-12, when the Hurricane scored back-to-back points to extend the match but would fall up just short as the Shockers took the final two points and the five-set victory.
 
After a slow start, Cassaday finished with 21 kills, her fifth match with 20 kills. Hembree tied her career high with 13 kills to go along with four blocks, while Dalogullari recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 10 kills and 15 digs.
 
Rautio tallied a season high 47 assists in her third game back in the starting lineup, while also digging 11 Shocker attacking attempts for her fourth double-double of the season. Rautio and Dalogullari were two of five Tulsa players with double-digit digs, joining Marta Pecalli (19), Hannah Overmyer (17), and Maddie Flora (12).
 
Tulsa will return to action at noon on Sunday, November 14th against Temple at the Reynolds Center.
