TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball team closes its preseason with an exhibition against Northeastern State on Wednesday evening.
The game tips off at 7:00 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
The Riverhawks enter off a 5-17 campaign in head coach Ja Havens' first season at the helm. The two teams met in March as Tulsa's last game before entering the conference tournament, with the Hurricane winning 107-74. Brandon Rachel led the way with 18 points. Keyshawn Embery-Simpson added 14, Darien Jackson 11 and Rey Idowu had 10.
After this final warmup, the Hurricane starts its 2021-22 campaign on Wednesday, Nov. 10 with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Northwestern State.
The Game
- Tulsa takes on the Riverhawks in the Hurricane's lone exhibition at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Wednesday Evening.
- It's the final warmup before the season tips off on Wednesday, Nov. 10 against Northwestern State, also in the Reynolds Center.
- NSU was selected to finish 13th in the MIAA Coaches and Media Polls.
- Senior returner Brad Davis scored 11.9 points per game on 33.7 percent shooting and 30.9 from beyond the arc.
- The Riverhawks add 10 newcomers this season, including three with Division I experience.
- This is the 22nd meeting between the two programs, with Tulsa leading the series 17-4.
- Tulsa has won six straight against the Riverhawks.
- Tulsa and NSU last met on March 4, 2021 in the Reynolds Center. The Hurricane came away with a 107-74 victory.
- Six Hurricane players finished in double figures, led by Brandon Rachal's 18. Returners Embery-Simpson scored 14, Jackson had 11 and Idowu had 10. Troy Locke led the way for NSU with 24 points on 8-10 shooting, 5-5 from 3-point range.
The 107 points was a season-high for the Hurricane. Tulsa shot 65.6 percent from the field and 48.3 from deep, both also season highs. In addition, TU had season highs in assists (26) and three-pointers made (14).
- Former Tulsa guard Ryan Gendron is a member of the Riverhawk's team.
- Northeastern State head coach Ja Havens spent four seasons on the University of Tulsa staff as a director of basketball operations 2001-2005).
- David Deets, Tulsa's Assistant AD for Athletic Performance, is a 2000 graduate from Northeastern State. His 1999 football team was recently inducted into Northeastern State's Hall of Fame. It was the second quickest team to qualify for the NCAA postseason after moving from the NAIA level.
