Tulsa to Take on UTEP in First Round of NIVC

TULSA, Okla. – After accepting an invitation to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) on Sunday night, the Tulsa volleyball team will head to Colorado to take on the UTEP Miners on Thursday, December 2nd at 6 pm (CT).
This is the fourth edition of the NIVC since its reboot with Fort Collins, Colorado based Triple Crown Sports. Tulsa competed in the NIVC in 2018 and 2019, and excluding last season's shortened season, has made the NIVC in three straight full seasons.
Colorado State will host the first two rounds of Tulsa's part of the NIVC bracket. Alongside Tulsa and UTEP, The Rams are also playing host to Houston Baptist tomorrow following the conclusion of the Tulsa-UTEP match. The winners of the first-round matches are slated to play on Friday, December 3rd at 8 pm (CT).
Tulsa finished the season 14-15 overall, 9-11 in conference play. Kayley Cassaday earned her first career AAC All-Conference honors yesterday when she was named to the All-Conference First Team after posting 439 kills, third most in the conference, as well as 3.99 kills per set, second-most in the conference, on .242 hitting percentage. The junior was also named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll twice this season.
Marta Pecalli has impressed in a promising freshman campaign. The Italian libero has 525 digs on the season, which is the third-most in the AAC, and has a team-best 32 service aces.
Tulsa and UTEP have plenty of history competing against each other, as the two programs used to be Conference USA foes. Thursday's match will be the 55th meeting all-time between the schools, and the first since 2017 when the Hurricane swept the Miners at the North Texas Invite. UTEP however holds the all-time series lead by a slim margin, 28-26. The Miners finished the regular season 21-7, and 8-4 in C-USA play.
