
Tulsa’s Comeback Bid Falls Short in Overtime, 85-77

The Tulsa women's basketball team's comeback bid against Wichita State fell short in overtime, 85-77, on Tuesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Golden Hurricane fell to 5-13 on the season and 4-13 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Shockers moved to 5-11 overall and 2-9 in the league.
"Wichita State didn't miss many shots all night," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "They scored at every position and in every way. We stopped one thing and then they'd do something else. In overtime they didn't miss a shot. We just couldn't stop them. We scored enough points, we shot well enough, but we just couldn't come away with the win."
Wyvette Mayberry scored a career-high 24 points, going 8-of-22 from the field and hitting four three-pointers, while Maya Mayberry recorded 21 points. Olivia Clayton more than doubled her season total with 10 points and added eight rebounds.
"Olivia hasn't played that much all year and tonight she played 26 minutes and nearly finishes with a double-double," Mossman said. "She was solid, and it gives us a lot to look forward to."
A fast-break layup by Maddie Bittle to start the fourth quarter pulled Tulsa to within two, 58-56. The Shockers climbed to a six-point lead three times in the frame, including a 66-60 score with 5:01 to play in the contest, but a three-pointer by Maya Mayberry and a layup by Wyvette Mayberry pulled the Hurricane to within one, 66-65, at the 3:20 mark. It stayed a one-possession game as time ticked down on the clock, but a layup by Olivia Clayton with just 19.8 seconds remaining tied the game at 69-69. Neither team was able to score in the final seconds, sending the game into overtime.
WSU didn't miss a field goal in overtime, going 5-of-5 from the field, including 1-of-1 from behind the arc, and hit 5-of-6 from the free throw line. The Shockers outscored Tulsa 16-8 in the five-minute period for the eight-point win.
Tulsa had a 12-1 lead in steals, forcing 20 turnovers by the Shockers while the Hurricane had just six turnovers. The Shockers had a 48-34 lead in rebounds, a 17-16 edge in assists, a 6-3 lead in blocks.
Wichita State jumped out to an early 6-0 lead at the 8:17 mark of the first quarter, but TU battled back to take a 9-8 advantage with 5:30 to play in the frame. The Hurricane climbed to a six-point lead, 18-12, at the 3:53 mark, but WSU outscored TU, 9-2, to close out the quarter with a 21-20 advantage.
The Shockers inched ahead to an eight-point lead, 35-27, with 5:46 on the clock in the second quarter. Tulsa closed the deficit to just three points, 39-36, with 2:47 remaining in the half, but WSU finished the frame with a 7-3 scoring edge to take a 46-39 lead into halftime.
TU was down by 10 points twice in the third quarter, including a 56-46 deficit with 6:52 on the clock, but an 8-0 scoring run by the Hurricane pulled them to within two, 56-54, with 1:01 to play in the frame. A layup by Trajata Colbert with just 29-seconds remaining in the quarter snapped a 6:23 scoring drought for the Shockers and gave them a 58-54 lead with one quarter to play.
In the game, Tulsa shot 35-percent from the field, 37-percent from three-point range and 70-percent from the free throw line, while Wichita State shot 56-percent from the field, 58-percent from behind the arc and 72-percent from the line.
Two WSU players recorded double-doubles, including 15 points and 10 rebounds from Seraphine Bastin, while Trajata Colbert scored 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. An additional three players scored in double digits, including a team-best 20 points from DJ McCarty, while Carla Bremaud added 18 points and Asia Strong scored 14. The Shockers played without their second-leading scorer, Mariah McCully, who averages 12.0 points per game this season.
Tulsa had a 16-7 lead in points off turnovers, a 14-10 advantage in second chance points, an 18-8 lead in fast break points and a 15-4 advantage in points off the bench. Wichita State had a 32-22 lead in points in the paint.
Tulsa will return to action in the American Athletic Conference Championship on Monday, March 8 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The bracket will be announced at a later date.
