Tulsa Women’s Tennis Takes Down Temple 6-1

TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa women's tennis team closed out the home season on Senior Day Wednesday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center with a 6-1 victory over the Temple Owls, improving it season record to 12-5.
The loss for the Owls was just its second in nine matches, dropping to 7-2 on the season.
Tulsa, ranked 45th nationally, lost the doubles point but jumped out in dominating fashion to start singles play, claiming the first set on all six matches and eventually winning the six matches in straight sets.
Vera Ploner jumped out to 3-0 lead in each of her sets at the No. 4 spot and went on for 6-1 wins to tie the overall match at 1-1. At the No. 2 position, Laie Conde Monfort was dominating as well, winning by scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
Tulsa's No. 1 and the nation's 98th-ranked player Martina Okalova put the Hurricane head by a count of 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory, while improving her season record to 12-3.
Valeryia Rozenkova and Lian Benedejcic took wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots, respectively, for the Hurricane. Rosenkova garnered her 10th win of the season with a 6-2, 6-1 victory, while Benedejcic had her team-leading 13th victory with a 6-3, 6-0 win.
In the final match, Tulsa's Shura Poppe, at No. 3, won the first set 6-4 after trailing 4-3, and after being down 4-1 in the second set she bounced back to tie the match at 4 and 5 and won the final two games for a 7-5 victory.
Tulsa goes on the road for matches at USF (April 17) and No. 16-ranked UCF (April 19) before beginning the American Athletic Conference Championship on April 21 in Orlando, Fla.
