Tulsa, Okla. After pausing team activities due to positive COVID-19 cases last week, the Tulsa volleyball team is set to begin their 2021 campaign with a trio of matches at the Maverick Classic in Arlington, Texas. The Golden Hurricane will open with two matches on Friday, September 3rd, facing Sam Houston at 11:00 a.m. and tournament host UT Arlington at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+ before taking on North Texas on Saturday, September 4th at 1:30 p.m. The matches against Sam Houston and North Texas can be watched on www.UTAMavs.com/watch.

Tulsa, who had their matches against Nebraska, Kansas State, and Colgate canceled last week, return all seven starters from last season's team, and 11 letterwinners overall while welcoming three newcomers to a heavily experienced roster.

The middle blocking duo of Maggie Hembree and Callie Cook return as graduate students. Last season, Hembree was named to the American Athletic Conference all-conference second team, while cook set the school record for most total blocks in a career with 408.

Head coach Ryan Wills will begin his 8th year at the helm of the Tulsa volleyball program. The University of Tulsa grad has compiled a 110-92 record overall.

Sam Houston is coming off an undefeated weekend, going 4-0 at the Bearkat Invitational, knocking off Houston Baptist and San Diego State each twice.

Tournament host UT Arlington has yet to notch a win on the young season, losing to Abilene Christian and twice to Incarnate Word at the ACU Invitational last weekend.

North Texas and Tulsa will clash for the 25th time overall, with the Hurricane leading 15-9 in the series. The Mean Green enter the weekend 2-1, picking up wins over South Dakota State and Grambling State after dropping the season opener to McNeese State.
