Tulsa Volleyball Storms Back To Defeat Memphis, 3-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The University of Tulsa volleyball team rallied after losing the first set to secure a 3-1 win (16-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-23) over the Memphis Tigers (18-14, 8-11 AAC) Wednesday on the road.
 
The win boosted the Golden Hurricane's record to 13-17 overall and 6-12 in AAC action.
 
Outside hitter Kayley Cassaday (.286) put up monster numbers for the Hurricane, landing 26 kills and only six errors in a whopping 70 total attacks. As the season winds down, she now has 514 kills in 1,604 total attacks on the year.
 
Defensive specialist Ryann Thomas stepped up in the attack by adding two service aces and a career-high 11 kills from the outside position. She also secured three blocks in the win.
 
Setters Brayden Hipp (23) and Avery Kalsu (20) boosted the Hurricane attacks with 43 total assists.
 
On the defensive end, libero Marta Pecalli led the floor with 21 digs to go with a career-high six blocks from middle blocker Regan Pendleton.
 
"I'm proud of how the team fought and responded to a tough start," said Head Volleyball Coach Ryan Wills. "Kayley [Cassaday] had an exceptional offensive performance, and the way our freshmen players performed created a spark for us today."
 
Tulsa will wrap up the season in Dallas against SMU (21-9, 14-4 AAC) on Friday, Nov. 25, at 1 p.m.

» Memphis, the conference's top blocking team with 268 blocks on the year, lost the blocking battle Wednesday as the Hurricane out-blocked the Tigers 9-5.

How It Happened
 
SET 1 | The Hurricane found itself in an early deficit, losing a tough first set 25-16. Tulsa trailed by as many as nine points as Memphis never surrendered the lead.
 
SET 2 | Tulsa responded to pick up a 25-11 victory in the second set, evening the match at one set apiece. The Hurricane opened the set with a 9-0 run to take the lead and never looked back in the set to secure the victory. The Tulsa offense also got a boost from three service aces in the stanza.
 
SET 3 | Tulsa grabbed another win in set three to go up two sets to one. The Hurricane survived a back-and-forth set to win 25-22 in a stanza that featured four lead changes and 13 tie scores. Neither team held a lead of more than three points along the way. Tulsa's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Memphis attacks in the stanza.
 
SET 4 | Tulsa closed out the match with a 25-23 fourth-set victory, winning its third straight set. The Hurricane took the lead late at 24-23 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Hurricane took over in the second half of the stanza.
