Game One Book | Game Two Book

RUSTON, La.
– The University of Tulsa softball team beat Sam Houston before falling to Louisiana Tech as the Golden Hurricane wrapped up the LA Tech Invitational on Sunday at Dr. Billy Bundrick Field.

Samantha Pochop was in total command against the Bearkats, leading the Hurricane to a 4-0 win in the day's opening game. Tulsa struck first in the matchup with Louisiana Tech but couldn't get the run support to stay ahead as a walk-off home run lifted LA Tech to a 3-2 win in Tulsa's final game of the tournament.

Tulsa (3-6, 0-0) finished 2-2 this weekend, winning and losing a game against each opponent. Louisiana Tech moved to 5-4 with its win against the Hurricane, while Sam Houston dropped to 3-5. Those two teams still had a game against each other to play later in the day.

Game 1

Pochop gave up one hit in a complete-game shutout against Sam Houston in the day's opening matchup. The senior pitcher struck out nine Bearkats and only walked one batter.

Tulsa finished with four runs and eight hits while committing no errors, while the Bearkats committed two errors. Pochop improved to 2-2 with the win, while Mika Vento fell to 1-3.

Neither team did anything in the opening frame, and Pochop struck out the side in the top of the second inning to bring her total to four. In the bottom half of the second, Celeste Wood led off with a double and MaKayla Jackson brought her in with a single for the game's first run.

Pochop picked up another two strikeouts in the third and the Hurricane struck again in the bottom of the inning, starting with another leadoff double. Kailyn Bearpaw was the one to do the honors this time. Gracie Jarvis came in to pinch run and immediately scored thanks to a Kylie Norwood single to make it 2-0. Norwood reached second on a bunt single from Haley Morgan, and after a sac-bunt moved everyone over, Wood brought her home with a sacrifice fly, giving Tulsa a 3-0 advantage.

Sam Houston finally recorded a hit in the fifth with a leadoff single to left, but Pochop got strikeouts seven and eight for the first and third outs and got another batter to foul out.

The Hurricane added its fourth and final run in the bottom of the fifth. Once again, it was a leadoff double, this time from Morgan, that kickstarted a scoring inning. A walk and a fielder's choice put runners on the corner with one out for Jackson. She came through with a sacrifice fly, bringing Morgan in to score.

Following another 1-2-3 sixth inning, Pochop got back in the circle for the seventh. She caused a pop up and line out before finishing off the Bearkats with her ninth strikeout of the day.

Game 2

The Hurricane made a miraculous comeback to top the Lady Techsters 8-7 in Saturday's game. On Sunday, LA Tech returned the favor with a late comeback and walk-off home run in a 3-2 loss for the Hurricane.

Pochop (2-3) picked up the loss after entering the game in relief in the sixth inning, while Emma Hutchinson (3-2) recorded the win for the Techsters. Makenzie Brown earned the start in the circle for the Hurricane. She allowed two runs on three hits in 5.2 innings of work. The freshman struck out five and walked two.

Tulsa scored its two runs on five hits with one error, while Louisiana Tech had four hits and one error. Tulsa left seven runners on base, including the bases loaded in the top of the sixth while holding a one run lead. The Lady Techsters left four runners on base.

Norwood started the game with a leadoff walk, and then scored when a sac-bunt down the third base line resulted in a throwing error that left a runner on third with nobody out. Imani Edwards singled, allowing Morgan to score, and just like that it was 2-0 Tulsa. However, the Hurricane would not score again.

LA Tech got its leadoff runner on in the first, but she was stranded there. The second inning saw both teams get their leadoff runner on before the following three batters were retired. Tulsa again got a runner to third with nobody out after Norwood started with a double and then a wild pitch. But the Hurricane couldn't find a way to get her home.

The Techsters got a run back in the third after a one-out triple put them in a dangerous position. A groundout to second brought in the run to make it 2-1. Neither team could get anything going for the next few innings.

Tulsa had its best chance to add insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Morgan led off with a bunt single and then stole second. After the next two hitters were retired, Jackson and Abby Jones drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Skaggs got ahead of the count 3-0, but Hutchinson battled back to force a groundout to end the threat.

The bottom of the sixth saw Tech in trouble with two outs and a runner on second. Tanja Smith stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. She was brought in on a single up the middle, tying the game at two. Pochop came on in relief of Brown and got the next batter to fly out.

A walk and a hit-by-pitch got runners on first and second for the Hurricane with two outs in the seventh, but TU was unable to capitalize. After getting the first batter to ground out, Pochop faced Aleya Hill, who was pinch hitting. Her solo shot ended the game and lifted the Techsters to victory.

Next up for the Hurricane is a trip to Austin, Texas for the Texas Classic before the first home games of the season with the TU/OSU Invitational. Tulsa faces Texas State in the first game in Austin on Friday. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
