Tulsa Prepped for AAC Indoor Championships

2/24/2022 12:04:00 PM | Track and Field

TULSA, Okla. Following a year-long hiatus, the Tulsa indoor track and field team will head to Birmingham, Alabama to compete in the 2022 American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on February 25-26 at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Both days will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Last year, The American Indoor Track & Field Championships were canceled due to Covid-19. Tulsa only competed in two indoor meets during the 2021 season.

Tulsa will send 46 athletes to compete this weekend, 30 on the men's side and 16 on the women's side. During the two days, the Hurricane will compete in 19 events.

TU is coming off productive showing at the Windy City Invite and the Gorilla Classic two weeks ago. Isaac Akers ran a sub-four-minute mile at 3:59.39, which was a personal-best, and is one of only 82 athletes this indoor season to run a mile in under four minutes. Akers will run the mile and 3,000-meter run this weekend.

Shay McEvoy will also run the mile and 3,000-meter run at the AAC Championships. McEvoy has two wins in the 3,000-meter this season, wins at the Washburn Open and Windy City Invite. Katharina Pesendorfer also has two wins this season, winning the 1,000-meter run at the Arkansas Invitational and the mile run at the Windy City Invite. Pesendorfer is one of nine Tulsa runners that will compete in the women's 3,000-meter run in Alabama.

The 2022 American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships will begin with the Women's Pentathlon at 9:00 a.m., while running events start at 12:25 p.m. with the women's trials in the mile run. On Saturday, the men's heptathlon kicks off the final day at 9:00 a.m., and the women's mile run final begins at 11:20 a.m., and commence the final running events.
