
Tulsa Falls on the Road at Temple

PHILADELPHIA, PA. –– A late run from the Temple Owls handed the University of Tulsa a 67-58 loss in front of 5,045 fans at the Liacouras Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Hurricane held a three-point lead, 49-46, with 6:02 remaining but on two possessions Temple was able to take back the lead. Tulsa tied the game again with 3:48 when Curtis Haywood II converted on an old-fashioned 3-point play to bring the teams even at 52. However, the Hurricane were outscored 15-6 the rest of the way.
Tulsa dropped to 7-14, 1-9 in The American Athletic Conference, with the loss, while Temple improved to 13-7 and 6-3 in conference play.
Rey Idowu was a perfect 8-of-8 from the field and hit five free throws to set a career-high 21 points, including 15 in the second half. Sam Griffin scored 11 and Jeriah Horne put up 10 and had seven rebounds. Anthony Pritchard had a team-high five assists.
Temple was led by Nick Jourdain's double-double, recording 15 points and 12 rebounds. Jeremiah Williams and Zach Hicks both dropped 13 and Damian Dunn scored 11.
Tulsa outshot the Owls 44-41 percent and neither team shot well from deep, 17 percent for Temple to 11 for the Hurricane. Tulsa was 1-of-9 from 3-point range in both halves. The rebounding was even at 36, but turnovers was where the battle was won. Tulsa turned it over 16 times resulting in 19 points for the Owls, while Temple only turned it over seven times resulting in six Tulsa points.
The Hurricane put itself in position to have a chance with another second half comeback following a double-digit deficit. Tulsa trailed 21-32 at the break and used the opening eight minutes of the second half to eat into the lead.
Trailing 38-29 with 16:05 remaining, Tulsa went on a quick 7-0 run to get within 38-36 at the 12:23 mark, capped by Griffin's lone 3-pointer of the night. Temple pushed the lead back to four before buckets from Idowu and Horne tied the game at 40 for the first time since 15-15 in the opening half.
The two teams traded buckets a couple of times before Idowu gave Tulsa the lead on an and-one opportunity. The senior converted from the line and put the Hurricane up 45-44 with 7:50 on the clock. Temple took the lead back on a Williams jumper before Idowu once again scored to put the Hurricane on top. Griffin extended Tulsa's lead to 49-46 with a fastbreak layup soon after.
In the opening half, LaDavius Draine got Tulsa started with a jumper off an inbounds pass in the opening minute. Horne followed with a turnaround jumper to make it 4-1. After another free throw from Temple, the Owls tied the score with its first field goal of the afternoon at the 17:14 mark.
Temple would take the lead as part of a 12-2 run, leading 13-6 with 12 minutes to play in the first half. Tulsa responded quickly, with a pair of free throws from Rey Idowu and back-to-back buckets from Horne to get within one, 13-12. Temple scored to extend its lead back to three before Haywood II knocked down a triple in the corner to tie things at 15 with 8:20 to play. Temple went on to outscore the Hurricane 17-6 the remainder of the half.
Tulsa hit 35 percent of its shots from the field in the opening 20 minutes, while the Owls knocked down 39 percent of its attempts. Idowu and Horne both scored six first half points to pace Tulsa.
The Hurricane return to the Reynolds Center for a two-game homestand starting on Tuesday with the East Carolina Pirate and ending on Saturday with Legends Day against Cincinnati. Tipoff against ECU is set for 7 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
