TULSA, OKLA. –– Vance Jackson's three-pointer with 0:11 on the clock gave East Carolina a 73-71 victory over Tulsa Tuesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Tulsa overcame a seven-point deficit in the final four minutes to take a 71-68 lead at the 1:07 mark. The Pirates scored on a Tristen Newton jumper to make it a one-point game, 71-70, setting up Jackson's game-winner from the right corner. Tulsa had an opportunity to tie the game at the end of regulation but a layup by Darien Jackson missed the mark.
The Hurricane had four double-digit scorers as Jeriah Horne led the way with 18 points, Rey Idowu had 16, Darien Jackson and Sam Griffin added 12 points each. ECU's Jackson scored 18 second-half points and finished the game with 22 points and was 6-of-11 from behind the arc.
Tulsa fell to 7-15 and 1-10 in the American Athletic Conference, while ECU improved to 12-11 and 3-9. The Pirates snapped an eight-game losing streak in the series against the Hurricane.
Tulsa led for 26:35 of the game with most of that coming in the first half, 18:17 to 0:46 for the Pirates. It was ECU's second-half three-point shooting that put the Pirates over the top. After hitting only 1-of-15 three-pointers in the first half, ECU converted 64-percent of its treys in the second stanza, knocking down 9-of-14.
The two teams each shot 50-percent from the field for the full 40 minutes and were even for points in the paint at 30 each. The Pirates knocked down five more field goals and three more treys than Tulsa, but the Hurricane scored 11 more points from the free throw line.
Trailing 68-63, Horne knocked down a trey with 2:50 on the clock to bring the Hurricane to within two points at 68-66. Darien Jackson's two free throws knotted the score at 68 and Horne's layup gave the Hurricane a 70-68 lead to extend Tulsa's run to 9-0.
To start the half, the Pirates came out of the locker room and took the lead after trailing 32-27. ECU went ahead 35-34 within just the first 1:20 of the half. It remained a one-point or tied game until the Hurricane took a 40-37 lead on a Darien Jackson layup at the 16:28 mark.
Tulsa took a four-point lead at 51-47 on a Horne three-pointer with just over 10 minutes to play, but the Pirates went on a 10-0 run to take a 57-51 at the 8:34 mark. ECU increased its lead to eight points at 59-51 and again at 61-53 before the Hurricane cut its deficit to three points, 61-58. ECU's Tremont Robinson-Jackson's third trey of the half put ECU back ahead 64-58 and that lead increased to seven points before the Hurricane made its comeback.
At the start of the contest, Tulsa jumped out to a 12-4 lead at the 16:20 mark before the Pirates stormed back in the next two minutes to close the gap to 12-10.
East Carolina took an 18-17 lead with 10:27 on the first-half clock, its first lead since an early 3-2 advantage. The Hurricane retook the lead and reached a seven-point advantage at 25-18 with 6:14 on the clock. The Pirates only got as close as five points the remainder of the first 20 minutes as the first half ended with Tulsa ahead 32-27.
At halftime, the two teams were nearly identical from the field at 39 percent for and 40 percent for the Hurricane. Rey Idowu and Jeriah Horne shared the first-half lead with eight points apiece.
