TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa softball took game one of a doubleheader with Abilene Christian before dropping game two on Wednesday afternoon at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
The Golden Hurricane overcome an early home run from the Wildcats to take the first game 4-1. Senior pitcher Samantha Pochop threw another gem, going the distance and striking out eight in the win, while junior catcher Rylee Keith went deep yet again.
In game two, Tulsa couldn't find a way to bring runs across the plate and the Wildcats took advantage of walks and errors in the seventh inning to blow a close game wide open in an 8-2 TU loss.
Tulsa moved to 9-15 after Wednesday's games, while the Wildcats are 13-13.
Game 1
Samantha Pochop threw a complete game, two-hitter to help Tulsa win 4-1 in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Pochop (5-6) struck out eight, walked one and allowed only one run over her seven innings of work. Tulsa scored its four runs on seven hits and committed an error, while Abilene Christian was credited with two errors.
Kylie Norwood was the only player with a multi-hit game. The senior was a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
The Wildcats did hold an early lead, jumping up 1-0 with a solo home run in the second inning, the visitor's first hit of the game. But Pochop settled down from there, allowing just one other hit the rest of the way.
The Hurricane responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Kailyn Bearpaw singled and was sacrificed to second. Another sac-bunt attempt resulted in a throwing error, allowing Bearpaw to score and Imani Edwards to get to third. A groundout brought Edwards home and put Tulsa ahead 2-1.
After Pochop worked through a two-out walk to set the Wildcats down in the third, Tulsa put runners on the corners with back-to-back singles. A fielder's choice groundout scored the third run of the afternoon.
Tulsa scored its fourth and final run in the fourth inning. Catcher Rylee Keith homered for the third time this season, a solo shot over the centerfield wall to give Tulsa the 4-1 advantage.
Abilene Christian couldn't get through on Pochop as she faced the minimum in the final three innings thanks in part to a double play in the sixth. Tulsa loaded the bases in the fifth but was unable to add to its lead.
Game 2
Tulsa's offense couldn't get going and eventually the Wildcats blew the game open in the seventh inning, winning 8-2 in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
Kylee Nash (1-3) took the loss. She threw 2.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits, walking one. Sara Llamas-Howell pitched 4.0 innings of relief and was responsible for four runs, two of which were earned. She struck out three but walked four. Makenzie Brown finished the game, getting the final two outs of the seventh while walking two and giving up two hits and two runs.
Tulsa scored its two runs on five hits and committed two errors, while ACU's eight runs came on seven hits and its defense also committed a pair of errors. Morgan was 3-for-3 in the nightcap from the leadoff position with a double, a stolen base and a run scored.
Abilene Christian scored first, just as in game one. A two-out single and walk in the first inning set the table for a one-run double. Tulsa responded in the bottom of the first as a leadoff double from Haley Morgan turned into three bases on an obstruction call. Celeste Wood struck out but made it safely to first on a dropped strike three and then error by the first baseman, scoring Morgan.
The Wildcats once again put together a mini two-out rally in the top of the second. An infield single got a runner on base. And then another single to the outfield got the runner to third. She then took advantage of the throw to score, putting the Wildcats up 2-1.
That score would hold until the seventh inning, despite Tulsa getting runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and sixth innings. The Hurricane had a fantastic opportunity in the sixth after a leadoff double from Wood. A walk put two on, but then a lineout, fielder's choice and strikeout ended the threat.
ACU took advantage of mistakes and walks to blow the game open in the seventh. After a strikeout to start the inning, an error put a runner on first. Three straight walks brought in a run to make it 3-1 and brought Brown to the circle.
The next batter doubled to center, scoring two, and then an error allowed a third run to cross the plate, making it 6-1. The Wildcats would go on to add two more runs before Tulsa escaped the inning.
Tulsa loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame with nobody out. A run came in on a groundout to cut the deficit to 8-2, but then a fielder's choice brought Tulsa to its last out. Claira Skaggs took off for home on a that got away from the catcher, but a fortunate bounce allowed the catcher to find the pitcher, who applied the tag, ending the game.
Up next for the Hurricane is a trip to Lawrence, Kan. for the Rock Chalk Challenge. Tulsa will face Nebraska and the hosts Kansas twice, while also taking on South Dakota in a tournament that starts on Friday morning.
