TULSA, Okla –The University of Tulsa softball team fell in the first home game of the season before responding with a victory in a doubleheader with DePaul at the Collins Family Softball Complex on Friday evening.
The Golden Hurricane started the TU/OSU Invitational with a 9-1 defeat to the Blue Demons but settled down to take game two 7-5.
Both teams moved to 6-9 on the season after the pair of games and will be back in action tomorrow morning and afternoon.
Game 1
The Blue Demons scored in each of the first three innings on its way to a 9-1 win in six innings in the day's first game. Tulsa scored just one run on four hits and committed three errors, while DePaul put nine across the plate on 11 hits and didn't have an error.
Samantha Pochop (3-4) went two and a third and was on the hook for five runs, three of which were earned. She struck out one and walked three. Natalie Halvorson (3-2) went the distance, striking out four.
Tulsa got its run in the fifth inning after Kennedy Cramer hit a sharp ground ball to third and Abby Jones, who doubled to start the inning, took off for home when the throw went to first. She just slid in under the tag to cut DePaul's lead to 5-1.
However, the Blue Demons put up four in the top of the sixth, shutting the door on any hopes of another comeback attempt.
Game 2
DePaul started game two with a bang, blasting a three-run home run to take the lead. This time, Tulsa fought back and took the lead late, winning 7-5.
Makenzie Brown (1-2) picked up the first win of her season, throwing 2.1 innings in relief and shutting down DePaul, allowing no hits, walking one and striking out five. Kylee Nash threw the first 4.2 innings, giving up six hits and five runs, walking six and striking out four.
Tulsa scored its seven runs on eleven hits, while DePaul scored five on six hits. Neither team committed an error in the second game.
After falling behind 3-0, Tulsa quickly got to work in the bottom of the inning. Haley Morgan and Kylie Norwood doubled back-to-back to put a run across with zero outs. After a hard-hit lineout, MaKayla Jackson fouled out to the first base side. But Norwood advanced to third anyway, using aggressive baserunning. She was rewarded as Jones singled her home, and then Jones was brought home on a deep double from Imani Edwards to tie the game at 3.
The teams shut each other down in the following innings until the top of the fifth, when a leadoff walk put the Blue Demons in business. A single put two on before a lineout for the first out. After another single loaded the bases, Nash struck out another Blue Demon. But she couldn't escape the inning as a two-run double reestablished the lead, 5-3.
Brown came to the circle in relief and emphatically struck out a pinch hitter to bring the top half of the inning to a close.
Just as they did in the first, the Golden Hurricane responded to the Blue Demons' runs. A deep out started the inning, but back-to-back singles and a wild pitch put two in scoring position with the tying run at second. A walk loaded the bases for Jones. She hit a groundball to second and created a close play at first where she was narrowly out. However, a run did cross the plate to cut the lead to 5-4 with two outs and two on.
Edwards came to the plate again, and again she met the moment, hitting a two-run single to give Tulsa a 6-5 lead. Kennedy Cramer followed with a towering fly ball to left that got lost in the lights, dropping harmlessly beyond the left fielder and allowing Edwards to score from first, giving Tulsa the 7-5 lead, which would stand until the game's end.
Brown struck out three the following inning as one of the strikeouts reached via a wild pitch. She then struck out the first batter she faced in the seventh and forced a groundout and popout to finish the game.
Next up for the Golden Hurricane is the final day of the TU/OSU Invitational. Tulsa will take on Minnesota and Stanford Saturday afternoon. First pitch against Minnesota is set for 4:00 p.m. Each of those games will feature at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
