WICHITA, Kan. – An eight-run third inning doomed the Tulsa softball team in its 13-4 six-inning loss to Wichita State on Saturday afternoon at C. Howard Wilkens Softball Complex.
The Golden Hurricane drops to 12-21-1 and 1-3-1 in the American Athletic Conference, while Wichita State moves to 19-10, 2-0 in The American.
Makenzie Brown (2-6) started and took the loss. She pitched 2.2 innings and gave up eight hits and nine runs while striking out five. Samantha Pochop and Sara Llamas-Howell also got in on the action, both throwing 1.1 innings. Pochop didn't allow a run, while Llamas-Howell was credited with the final four runs.
The game was flipped on its head in the bottom of the third when Wichita State scored eight runs to overcome a three-run deficit and take control. Six of those runs came with two batters out.
A two-run home run with one out got Wichita State within a run of Tulsa, 4-3. After Brown struck out a batter for the second out, a double and single brought in the tying run. The Shockers weren't done yet as a walk put two on. Tulsa looked to get out of the inning on a groundball to short, but the throw was judged to have taken Kylie Norwood off the bag, making the batter safe and another run crossed home, putting Wichita State up 5-4.
Another single up the middle brought in the sixth run, and the Shockers topped off the rally with a three-run home run, the second homer of the inning. That ended Brown's night and Pochop came in to shut it down with TU trailing 9-4.
The Shockers initially took a 1-0 lead after a pair of passed balls and a double in the bottom of the first gave WSU the lead with nobody out. Brown settled down to get the next three batters.
Tulsa responded in the second by taking advantage of Wichita State miscues. With two outs and runners on the corners, MaKayla Jackson struck out, however the ball got to the backstop and Jackson hustled down the first-base line, beating the throw and bringing in a run to tie the game at one.
Consecutive singles from Claira Skaggs, Haley Morgan and Norwood brought in a trio of runs to give Tulsa a 4-1 advantage. However, the Hurricane would not score again on the afternoon.
The Shockers would hit two-run home runs in the fifth and sixth innings, the latter being a walkoff, to round out its scoring.
Tulsa was outhit 14-6 in the loss and gave up four home runs for the second consecutive game. Wichita State committed two errors to Tulsa's one and stranded eight runners while Tulsa left six on base.
Abby Jones picked up her third double of the weekend with a two-out hit in the sixth. She's not got give on the season. Norwood had a two-hit afternoon with an RBI single in the second.
The Hurricane will try to avoid a series sweep on Sunday's finale at Wichita State. First pitch for the finale between the Shockers and Golden Hurricane is set for noon and will air on ESPN+.
