STANFORD, Calif. & DES MOINES, Iowa – There's something about the Cobb Track and Angell Field facility at Stanford and the Tulsa track and field team running historic times, as five Hurricane runners secured top-10 finishes in school history on a brisk California night.
Earlier this month, Micheal Power and Isaac Akers secured the second and third fastest 5,000-meter times in TU history at the Stanford Invitational, and tonight they secured the second and fifth fastest times, respectively, in the 1,500-meter. Power finished fourth at 3:40.97, while Akers placed seventh at 3:42.48.
Scott Beattie tallied the third fastest 5,000-meter time in TU history at 13:31.34, just behind Power's time earlier this year of 13:29.57, but ahead of Akers' 13:32.84 time. The three current Tulsa athletes only trail Patrick Dever, who set the record of 13:19.85 during his sixth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor 5,000-meter last June.
Peter Lynch and Cormac Dalton joined the three in the top-10 of Hurricane history in the 5,000-meter, as Lynch's 13:43.52 puts him in seventh while Dalton sits in eighth all-time at 13:43.77. Five of the top eight 5,000-meter times in Tulsa history have happened this season, specifically at the Cobb Track.
Tulsa also continued the Drake Relays today, as Jaidah McCallon claimed a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter at 2:09.20.
The Hurricane wrap up the weekend with the Rock Chalk Classic tomorrow in Lawrence, Kansas.
