Zack Long Named to the Lou Groza Award Watch List

Long was the nation's top field goal kicker a year ago converting 95.7 percent
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. –– The nation's returning leader for field goal percentage Zack Long was named to the 30-player Watch List for the 2022 Lou Groza Award Collegiate Place-kicker Award, it was announced today by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
Long connected on 22-of-23 field goals for a nation-leading 95.7 percentage last season.
Long joined the Golden Hurricane team as a walk-on in the spring of 2019, having never before kicked a field goal. Since then, Long has played in 34 career games and was awarded a scholarship at preseason camp a year ago. He first handled kickoffs in 2019 before taking on placements the last two seasons.
In his career, Long has converted 34-of-37 field goals and 60-of-62 PATs for 162 points. He ranks ninth on the school's all-time field goals chart with his 34 field goals made.
In 2021, Long was named to Phil Steele's All-America Fourth Team after knocking thru a school single-season record of 22 field goals and converting 35-of-36 PATs for 101 points. His 22 field goals is also the second-most for a single-season in American Athletic Conference history.
The 31st Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl, recognizes the three finalists during a celebration in Palm Beach County, culminating with a gala awards banquet at the West Palm Beach Marriott on December 5th.
The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
