Tulsa's 11th-ranked men's soccer team will open the 2022 campaign with a pair of road games at Marquette on Thursday, August 25, and at Wisconsin on Sunday, August 28, beginning at 5:00 pm and 1:00 pm, respectively.
Tom McIntosh returns for his 28th year at the helm of the men's soccer program. He has an overall 276-188-55 record and has notched a conference mark of 114-84-26.
TU posted a 16-2-1 overall record, claimed the American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships, and advanced to the NCAA Third Round a year ago. The Golden Hurricane returns 17 letterwinners, including seven starters from last season, as well as four returning squad members, and welcomes 15 newcomers to the roster.
Fifteen players scored a goal for Tulsa, including a team-best 12 goals by Alex Meinhard, seven by Malik Henry-Scott, three goals by Takayoshi Wyatt, and two by Tom Protzek, Austen Schweinert, Henry Sach and Mariano Fazio. Meinhard had four game-winning goals, while Henry-Scott had three. Alex Lopez logged 1,617 minutes between the posts, picked up 43 saves for a 0.768 saves percentage and allowed 13 goals for a 0.72 goals-against average.
Alex Meinhard, Mariano Fazio and Alex Lopez were named as The American Preseason Offensive, Defensive and Goalkeeper of the Year, respectively. That trio were all unanimous selections to the preseason all-conference team, while Henry Sach was also tabbed to the team.
Marquette posted a 7-8-1 overall record, including four wins in the BIG EAST last season. The Golden Eagles were picked to finish seventh in the BIG EAST in the preseason poll. MU returns 17 letterwinners and welcomes nine newcomers in 2022. Among those returning are 2021 all-league performers Lukas Sunesson (second team), Edrey Caceres (second team) and Beto Soto (third team). Sunesson was named to the 2022 preseason all-BIG EAST team. TU and MU are tied in the all-time series, 1-1, but it was Tulsa that earned a 1-0 victory over the Golden Eagles last season.
Wisconsin posted a 7-7-3 overall record, including three wins in the Big Ten last season. The Badgers were picked to finish eighth in the Big Ten preseason poll. Three Wisconsin players were among the 2022 Big Ten Men's Soccer Players to Watch List, including senior midfielders Inaki Iribarren and Ignasi Marques, and junior midfielder Tim Bielic. The Badgers have a 4-3-1 advantage in the all-time series, but the two teams battled to a 2-2 double-overtime tie during the 2017 campaign.
