Tulsa Volleyball Travels Across Town For ORU Golden Eagle Classic

Tulsa, Okla. — The University of Tulsa volleyball team will drive 20 minutes across town to play in the Oral Roberts Golden Eagle Classic at the Cooper Aerobics Center on Friday, Sept. 9, and Saturday, Sept. 10.

The Golden Hurricane will face UTEP first on Friday at 1 p.m. followed by a match with cross-town rival Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. Tulsa will finish against Abilene Christian on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Tulsa's match against Oral Roberts will be streamed on the ORU Sports Network.

Tulsa and UTEP have a long history as both teams used to be rivals in Conference USA. The last meeting between the two teams was in the first round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship last year, where the Hurricane lost 3-1 in a tightly contested match. The Miners currently lead the all-time series 29-26.

UTEP is now 2-4 after taking five-set losses to New Mexico, Portland State and South Dakota at home last week.

The Hurricane has faced Oral Roberts 82 times in a rivalry that dates back to 1976. Although the Golden Eagles hold the series advantage 57-25, Tulsa has won the last 13 matches between the two teams. During the Tulsa Invitational last year, the Hurricane took the Golden Eagles by storm, winning 25-22, 18-25, 25-22, 27-25 to secure the four-set victory.

ORU went 0-3 last weekend after falling to Illinois State, Southeast Missouri and Green Bay, bringing their overall record to 2-4.

This weekend marks the second all-time meeting between Tulsa and ACU. The first match was played in September of 2018 in which the Hurricane prevailed 3-2 in a back-and-forth slugfest (24-26, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13). The match featured 30 tie scores and 11 lead changes.

Last week Abilene Christian defeated Northwestern State and Missouri State and lost to the Missouri Tigers to give the Wildcats a 2-3 overall record.
