Berlanga and Nahurska Finish in Round of 16 at ITA Central Regional Championships

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Maria Berlanga Bandera and Oleksandra Nahurska both finished in the singles round of 16 Saturday to highlight the Tulsa women's tennis team's performance in the ITA Women's Central Regional Championships at the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence, Kan.

As one of 32 seeded players to receive a first-round bye, Berlanga, a junior, powered past Drake's Elizabete Klavinska (6-2, 6-1) and Kyoka Kubo (6-3, 6-4) of Kansas in straight sets to advance to the round of 16, one match shy of the quarterfinal round. Stopping Berlanga in the round of 16 was No. 51 Dana Guzman of Oklahoma by a score of 7-5, 6-2.

Nahurska, a fifth-year senior who also received a first-round bye, found herself in the round of 16 following a 6-2, 6-2 victory over South Dakota's Grace Chadick and 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 slugfest over Morgan Cross of the Arkansas Razorbacks. In her round of 16 match Saturday evening, No. 40 Ange Oby Kajuru halted Nahurska's momentum in a three-set shootout (6-2, 6-7(5), 6-0) that could've sent Nahurska to the quarterfinal.

In their first ITA tournament action, true freshmen Saniya Singh and Sofiia Zhylchuk each grabbed a pair of qualifying singles wins to earn spots in the Main Singles Draw. Singh defeated SIUE's Paula Guillen Cerver (SIUE) 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 and Missouri State's Elif Gunal 6-4, 6-1, while Zhylchuk took down Oral Roberts' Kaede Tada 6-1, 6-3 and Fabiana Labrador of Lindenwood 6-1, 6-4. Neither Hurricane would advance past the first round in main singles action.
