KATY, Texas. – The Tulsa women's basketball team began day two of the Van Chancellor Classic looking to pick up its first win over a Power 5 school in three years and did so with a 74-64 victory over the Clemson Tigers in the Merrell Center Saturday night. The Golden Hurricane improved to 5-1 on the year, while the Tigers dropped to 4-3.
Tulsa erased an eight-point deficit in the second quarter and used a 23-10 scoring run in the third quarter to propel itself to its first win over an ACC program since the 2006 NCAA tournament (NC State, 71-61).
"It was the defense that allowed us to hold on to some points in the second quarter," said Head Coach Angie Nelp. "In the second half, they had some players get in foul trouble, so they started pressuring us a bit more defensively and our team did such a great job countering that with scores around the rim. Early in the game and especially in the second quarter we took a lot of three-point shots when we could've worked the clock just a little bit more to open up better scoring opportunities. I can't say enough about the girls on this team and the way they stick together."
Temira Poindexter had another big game for the Hurricane, going up for 26 points off 11 shots from the field, including three from outside the arc to go with one free throw. Delanie Crawford was close behind with 21 points and led the team in shooting at 57.1 percent from both the field (8-14) and the rim (4-7).
Mady Cartwright went 3-of-6 on the day with all three baskets made from beyond the arc.
Crawford led Tulsa's defense with nine rebounds on the day. Poindexter, Katia Gallegos and Hadley Periman each had five rebounds, with Periman leading the way in offensive boards with three. Gallegos was the team leader in steals (5).

Tulsa's shooting was held to 26.3 percent (5-19) in the first period. Temira Poindexter missed seven of eight shots and went 0-of-6 in three-pointers.
IN THE SECOND QUARTER . . .
The second quarter was a reversal of the first quarter, where Tulsa outscored the Tigers 19-11 to knot up the game at 30-30 going into halftime. The Hurricane's defense stepped up, holding Clemson to 5-of-13 shots made, all coming from the Tigers' Amari Robinson.

Temira Poindexter (10) and Delanie Crawford (8) combined to score 18 of TU's 23 points. Amira Brown and Ahrray Young came off the bench to score five points, three of which came from Brown near the top of the key.
IN THE FOURTH QUARTER . . .
Although the Clemson offense revived itself with a game-high 24 points, it wasn't enough as Tulsa kept its foot on the gas with a 21-point performance to end the game on top 74-64.
Tulsa shot 53.3 percent (8-15) in the final quarter with Delanie Crawford and Temira Poindexter each leading the way with seven points.
