Poindexter Named All-Tournament Following Loss to No. 25 Mississippi State

KATY, Texas. – Junior forward Temira Poindexter was named to the Van Chancellor Classic All-Tournament Team following a tournament ending 102-58 loss to No. 25 Mississippi State at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. The Golden Hurricane (5-2) went 2-1 in the event, finishing over Arkansas Pine-Bluff and Clemson who each went 1-2. The Bulldogs were the outright champions with wins over every opponent.
 
"I'm absolutely proud of our effort," said Head Coach Angie Nelp. "This team always gives 100 percent every time they step on the court."
 
Tulsa was held to 37.3 percent (22-59) shooting on the day while Mississippi State landed over half its baskets at 51.4 percent (36-70).
 
Poindexter surpassed the 20-point mark for a third consecutive game, this time with 23 points to lead the Hurricane offense. She shot 8-for-22 from the field, 3-for-10 in three-pointers and 4-of-4 from the charity line.
 
Poindexter now has 989 career points, moving up four spots to 12th on TU's all-time points leaderboard.
 
Hadley Periman led Tulsa with seven rebounds, including five on defense and two on offense, while Katia Gallegos helped coordinate the offense with four assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
 
IN THE FIRST QUARTER . . . 
Tulsa scored the first two points off a pair of Temira Poindexter free throws and jumped to a 7-5 lead to open the first quarter. The Bulldogs took over at 8-7 and never trailed again in the game. From there, Mississippi State used an 18-8 scoring run to close out the first quarter 26-15. TU didn't commit a single turnover in the quarter, but couldn't capitalize on missed shots, scoring only four second-chance points.
 
IN THE SECOND QUARTER . . . 
Mississippi State led by as many as 18 points to close out the first half 50-32. Although Tulsa shot 50 percent (7-14), the Bulldogs made 62.5 percent (10-16) of their baskets to extend the lead. The Hurricane's bench outscored the Bulldogs' bench 7-6 to end the quarter.
 
IN THE THIRD QUARTER . . . 
The Bulldogs' offense didn't let up, outscoring Tulsa 26-13 and leading by as many as 32 points at 74-32 before finishing the quarter 76-45.
 
IN THE FOURTH QUARTER . . . 
Mississippi State dropped a third 26-point performance to run away with the game 102-58.
 
Delanie Crawford led Tulsa with eight points in the second half while Temira Poindexter scored seven.
 
GAME NOTES 
• This was Tulsa's first game against an SEC opponent since last year, when the Hurricane played Arkansas in Fayetteville on Nov. 14.
• This was also Tulsa's first game versus a ranked opponent since last season … previously the Hurricane played then-ranked No. 23 South Florida on Feb. 2 … Tulsa continues to seek its first win over a ranked opponent.
Temira Poindexter's 23 points Sunday against Mississippi State moves her to 989 career points, up from 16th to 12th all-time in scoring for TU.
Temira Poindexter had 52nd career double-figure scoring game.
Delanie Crawford surpassed 100 career three-pointers and 300 total rebounds.
 
Tulsa will wrap up its five-game road tilt next week Friday, Dec. 1, at TCU (7-0). Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
