BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The University of Tulsa track team had two champions to go with another meet record and eight all-conference performances Saturday to close out The American Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala. The Golden Hurricane men finish fifth overall with 88 points while the women scored 59 points to finish in a fifth-place tie with SMU.
Â
The TU women produced three all-conference performances on Saturday, including a 4x400-meter relay team (Jayda Gibson, Anna Mager, Lianne Holtermann and Elizabeth Roca) that earned a third-place finish. Juniors Layla Roebke and Chloe Hershenow finished second and third overall, respectively, in the women's 3,000-meter run, narrowly missing out on repeating their 1-2 feat from Friday's 5,000-meter run. Roebke finished as the third-highest scoring women's track athlete with 18 points.
Â
Elizabeth Roca also picked up a new personal best in the women's 400-meter dash, finishing fourth overall.
Â
"It was a solid showing for the women," said Head Track and Field Coach Steve Gulley. "We are walking out of here in a tie for fifth, and we had some girls step up today. Layla Roebke and Chloe Hershenow battled hard in the 3,000-meter run. Sara Scott also had a strong performance in the same race. The third-place showing by our 4x400-meter relay team was an awesome way to end the meet."
Â
The Hurricane men capitalized on their strong performance on Friday and added two more champions on Saturday. Junior Christian Baker won the men's mile run in 4:05.67, making it the fourth career first place finish and first conference-winning performance for the Kirkwood, Mo. native.
Â
Senior Micheal Power—the last leg of the men's distance medley relay team that was disqualified on Friday—had a stellar performance in the 3,000-meter run, putting up a 7:52.80 finish to set a new meet record.
Â
Senior Scott Beattie added a fourth-place finish in Saturday's 3,000-meter run to end the meet as the third-highest scoring men's track athlete with 15 points.
Â
"Even though we were missing some athletes this weekend due to injury, we maximized where we could and didn't leave any points out there," said Gulley. "Christian Baker put on a show, and Micheal Power showed massive character to bounce back tonight after the distance medley relay results last night. Josh Sutton had some great runs in the 60 and 200-meter dashes as well. We're not satisfied with a fifth-place team finish, but considering all that happened for us, we feel proud of how we performed."
Â
Tulsa's next team action will be at the Stanford Invitational on March 31.
