LAWRENCE, Kan. –– Due to predicted poor weather this weekend, the Tulsa softball team, 14-11 on the season, hits the road for a doubleheader against the Kansas Jayhawks Wednesday afternoon in the Golden Hurricane's lone games in the Rock Chalk Challenge.
The Hurricane was slated to play games against Kansas City, Kansas, Fairfield and Nebraska in a weekend tournament, but an expected cold front forced a change of plans. As it stands, Tulsa will finish the nonconference portion of its season with Wednesday's doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. with a 4:30 p.m. scheduled start time for the second game.
Game one will mark the 25th time the two teams have met. Tulsa leads the series 14-10 and are 8-4 on the road. The Hurricane participated in the same tournament in Lawrence a year ago and took both matchups with Kansas.
TU is coming off a 4-1 weekend at the TU Invitational where Tulsa 4-3 and 1-0 wins over Northern Iowa, as well as defeating Sam Houston 7-1 and 7-5. Tulsa scored 23 runs in the five games with three home runs, five doubles and a .313 batting average. TU pitchers made life difficult for opponents, holding them to a .167 average.
As a team, Tulsa is slashing .293/.359/.413 this season with 192 hits and 117 runs scored. In the circle, Tulsa's pitchers have struck out 102 batters while holding opponents to a .239 average.
After batting .600 last weekend, shortstop Imani Edwards joins center fielder Haley Morgan in the .400 club for the season. Edwards, right at the .400 mark, has 11 RBI this season along with two doubles, three triples and a home run.
Kailyn Bearpaw put together a solid weekend at the Tulsa Invitational and earned a spot on The American's weekly Honor Roll. The sophomore right fielder batted .375 with six hits in 16 at-bats. She doubled twice and drove in eight runs, including a career-high five RBI in the finale against Sam Houston State. She and Claira Skaggs lead the team with 18 RBI apiece this season. Skaggs added two more home runs to her tally, bringing her total to a team-leading five.
Sophomore Maura Moore has lowered her ERA to 2.68 and has posted an 8-3 record after earning the win in each of her three appearances over the weekend. She pitched a one-hit shutout against Northern Iowa on Saturday. Junior Kylee Nash is 6-6 on the season with a pair of saves and 54 strikeouts, which leads the team.
