Berlanga Named American Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

IRVING, Texas — Maria Berlanga Bandera of The University of Tulsa's newly-ranked women's tennis team (No. 61) was named the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the week, announced by the league today. It is the first career weekly conference award for the sophomore from Malaga, Spain.
 
Berlanga put together a strong performance against Abilene Christian in the Golden Hurricane's only match last week. She clinched the doubles point for TU with a 6-3 decision at the No. 1 position with sophomore partner Lily Hutchings. Then, Berlanga capped off Tulsa's 7-0 sweep over the Wildcats with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win at the No. 2 spot.
 
Currently on a three-match win streak, Berlanga is 9-3 in dual match singles play and 13-7 on the year. In doubles action, she leads the way with a 10-3 record in the spring season.
 
Tulsa kicks off a seven-match road stretch this Sunday, Mar. 12, against San Diego State (4-4) at 2 p.m. Then, the Hurricane will stop at No. 37 San Diego (4-5) on Tuesday, Mar. 14, at 3:30 p.m.
