ORLANDO, Fla. — The University of Tulsa men's tennis team prevailed in a 4-3 dual match victory over the No. 58 South Florida Bulls (12-12) Friday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. Senior Stefan Hampe scored the match-clinching point to secure Tulsa's fourth-straight win.
The win improves the Golden Hurricane to 11-11 on the year.
The doubles point came down to the No. 2 position after Ezequiel Santalla and Stefan Hampe closed out the third position 6-2 and Connor Di Marco and Kody Pearson dropped the first position 6-3. Timothy Carlsson Seger and Daniel Siddall battled to a 6-4 win at Doubles No. 2 to secure the Hurricane's first point.
Seger kicked off the scoring in singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 decision at the sixth position. He has won four straight and six of his last seven completed head-to-head matches.
After South Florida responded with a two-set decision at Singles No. 3, Adham Gaber extended Tulsa's lead to 3-1 after earning a 6-4, 6-4 win in the fifth position, improving his win streak to three in a row and earning his fifth win in his last six showings.
The Bulls would not back down as South Florida grabbed back-to-back wins in the first and third positions to tie up the dual match at 3-3, putting the fate of the dual match in the hands of senior Stefan Hampe in the second position. After dropping the first set 7-6 (11-9), Hampe bounced back in the next two stanzas, earning 7-5 and 6-2 set victories to clinch and end the dual match 4-3.
The streaking Hurricane will stay in Orlando and end the regular season against No. 49 UCF (9-11) on Sunday, April 16, at 11 a.m. The American Athletic Conference championships will kick off next Friday, April 21, at the USTA National Campus.
