ORLANDO, Fla. — Following a strong performance in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, the No. 4 seed University of Tulsa women's tennis team could not overcome a strong first-seeded No. 35 SMU squad (15-8), falling 4-0 to the Mustangs Friday in the semifinal of the American Athletic Conference Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. The 73rd-ranked Golden Hurricane fell to 14-11 overall in a match that was delayed two hours due to rain.
The initial advantage went to SMU as the Mustangs grabbed 6-1 and 6-2 scores in the second and third positions in doubles play, leaving the No. 1 spot unfinished.
The Hurricane couldn't slow down the Mustangs' momentum in singles play, dropping two-set decisions in the first, second and fourth positions. In the third position, TU's Lily Hutchings scored a 6-0 result in the second stanza to force a third set before the dual match was clinched and ended by SMU's Jackie Nylander in the No. 4 position.
