TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa men's tennis earned 4-1 and 6-1 wins over No. 38 Oklahoma State and Creighton during Saturday's doubleheader Senior Day at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Seniors Connor Di Marco, Adham Gaber, Stefan Hampe, Kody Pearson, Ezequiel Santalla and Daniel Siddall were honored before the Creighton match.
The wins improved the 59th-ranked Golden Hurricane to 10-11 on the season.
Tulsa began the day against in-state opponent Oklahoma State. The doubles point came down to the No. 1 position after Ezequiel Santalla and Stefan Hampe closed out the third position 6-3 and Timothy Carlsson Seger and Daniel Siddall dropped the second position 6-4. In a match where neither team held more than a two-point lead, 84th-ranked Connor Di Marco and Kody Pearson forced a tiebreaker set at 6-6 in which they prevailed 7-2 to capture the doubles point for TU.
Adham Gaber kicked off the scoring in singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win over OSU's Francisco Pini at Singles No. 5. Gaber used 4-1 leads in both sets to put the Hurricane up 2-0 on the Cowboys.
Oklahoma State responded with a win at No. 3 Singles before Seger closed out a 6-2, 7-5 decision in the sixth position to extend Tulsa's lead to 3-1. Seger has won three straight at the No. 6 spot and five of his last six head-to-head matches.
Clinching and ending the match at 4-1 was Junior Volodymyr Zakharov with a 7-6(4), 6-1 victory at the No. 4 position over Oklahoma State's Alessio Basile. Zakharov's second-straight win in the fourth position gave the Hurricane its first ranked victory of the season and first win over Oklahoma State since 2019.
The Hurricane carried the momentum heading into the dual match with Creighton. Tulsa secured the doubles point thanks to a 6-1 win by Di Marco and Pearson in the first position and a 6-2 decision by Hampe and Santalla in the third.
In singles play, four TU athletes needed only two sets to win their head-to-head matches. After Tulsa grabbed wins in the first, second, third and fifth positions, Zakharov capped off the night with a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Bluejays' Oscar Alvarez to win his third match in a row.
Tulsa will head to Florida to take on American Athletic Conference foes South Florida (12-11) and UCF (8-11) on Friday, April 14, and Sunday, April 16.
