TAMPA, Fla. — Six University of Tulsa student-athletes qualified for finals on the opening day of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships before lightning in the area cut the day short. The men's and women's 10,000-meter races, initially scheduled for Friday night and slated to feature 11 total Golden Hurricane competitors, have been moved to 7:00 and 7:45 a.m. starts on Saturday.

"Overall, strong first day despite not being able to race the 10,000-meters," said Head Coach Steve Gulley. "Got everybody we wanted through to finals today. We'll be very happy if we can get in some good 10,000-meter races to start the day tomorrow. On to day two."

Junior Keely Jones started the day on a high note for Tulsa in the women's 1,500-meter run, finishing sixth overall and third in her heat in 4:30.61 for an automatic bid to Sunday's final. On the men's side of the event, junior Christian Baker, sophomore Shay McEvoy and freshman Chanel Muir each placed among the top four of their heats to automatically qualify for the finals.

Sophomore Anna Mager (400-meter hurdles) and junior Josh Sutton (200-meters) punched in their tickets to the finals after they both placed among the required top eight in their respective preliminary events. Mager turned in a 1:00.19 performance for sixth place, while Sutton crossed the line in 21.18 as the eighth overall finisher.

Tulsa will start tomorrow with the rescheduled women's and men's 10,000-meter runs, with the women going first at 7 a.m.
