IRVING, Texas — Graduate outside hitter Kayley Cassaday and junior libero Marta Pecalli were named the American Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, the league announced Monday. It is the first time Tulsa has swept the weekly awards as a member of The American.
From Overland Park, Kan., Cassaday brings home her first career Offensive Player of the Week honors after putting up 18 or more kills at 6.6 kills per set in each of the Golden Hurricane's three wins in last week's Tulsa Invitational. Her 23 kills in the sweep over UT Arlington is tied for the second-highest mark in a three-set match nationwide.
Cassaday has jumped to the top of The American in kills (145), kills per set (5.58), points (152) and points per set (5.85). Her kills per set and points per set marks rank second among all Division I athletes in the country.
Hailing from Trieste, Italy, Pecalli secures her third career Defensive Player of the Week honors following a 58-dig performance in the Tulsa Invitational. She peaked at 23 digs in the three-set win over Oral Roberts, and she anchored the TU defense with 5.8 digs per set over the course of the tournament. Pecalli is now eighth in the AAC in digs per set (4.15).
Tulsa will wrap up the non-conference portion of the season next week at the SFA Tournament, where the Hurricane will take on Ole Miss (5-3), Stephen F. Austin (8-2) and Sam Houston (6-4) this Friday and Saturday in Nacogdoches, Texas.
